The Abbot is still conditioning so can't gauge the closeness to the original yet. Early sample indicate it's along the same lines as Abbot though!

I got my ingredients from the local homebrew shop (including the maize) but the Goldings and pale/crystal malt came from my local microbrewery.

Hard to calculate cost as I already had some of the pale malt and all of the crystal + goldings...

Now I think I like that one. I say think as I only tend to drink it after a session when all caution has gone to the wind :stun . And then I dont remember.....

I've just been in an area where Abbot was the main beer on tap (well in the pubs I entered). On more that one occasion I thought it was a rather fine pint so I was wondering how yours turned out? :?

I am brewing on monday and this may be be my target. :)

I had a pint of Abbot Ale for the first time yesterday unintentionally - my girlfriend got it for me from the bar after I asked her to pick something for me even though i've complained about Greene King to her in the past - i've got to say it was quite minging. The cask was obviously fresh and well kept but I really didn't care for the strong hop aroma & flavour it had which was unmistakably Fuggle. I don't know whether they dry hop it with Fuggle plugs or use late hop/hop back, but I really don't like the aroma of that hop. Oddly enough I do quite like it for bittering some beers - you get a bit of the earthiness without it being overwhelming like in Abbot.

my dad brewed this from BBLTYB when he was young, so thats a good 20-30 years ago! lovely apparently, and he used the dregs of an abbot from his local as a starter.

Holy thread revival Batman!

I too am partial to a drop of Abbot - my local (20yds closer than the next local, some 80 yds away) is a Greene King house (still - it didn't get sold off to Admiral Taverns), and he keeps a good pint of Abbot. I steer clear of anything else brewed in the Bury St Edmunds Sugarbeet Factory Effluent Rebarrelling plant. I find IPA sulphurous, and it gives me a bad head and guts in the morning. It's never been any good since they stopped brewing it in Biggleswade (then shut/bulldozed the plant).

Greene King was once a nice little local brewery. Then it became GK PLC. That was the end of "brewing" as we know it. It's now a beer factory hell bent on profit at the expense of ale. When Morland bought out Ruddles (a silly move), that weakened them and GK pounced. OSH is now a horrible tainted brew compared to how it used to be when brewed in Abingdon.

Ruddles County - the same.

There are a long list of brewers now raped and pillaged by GK. Out of all of that, the only ale that still tastes the same as it did before they went public and started buying, is Abbot.

Warning, never drink Abbot while sitting down. It fills the legs first, and when it get's to your knee's, the joints go all wobbly.
If you sit down, it affects your hips, and this compromises the ability to stand at all. Many pints have been consumed to confirm these facts. ;)

I know it has been some time since you made the Abbott..but I too recently visited JDW Spoons in Doncaster and sampled the Abbott Ale which is that popular that it is now the resident Beer..It was fantastic... :D

As you can see others on here are now eager to know (including me of course) how does it fair with the real thing? Is it worth making :wink

Hi, sorry not to have replied sooner.

To be honest I can't remember too much about this one. I do recall that it tasted nothing like Abbot though! That may well have been down to me however :) Give it a punt, Dave Line's recipes are good 8)

Hey Chaps
I want to carry out an Abbot clone as listed at the beginning of this thread. Did I read somewhere that I should lower the hop rates of Dave Line's recipes slightly as the quality of hops has increased since the 70's?
Also if I am getting a efficiency of around 70% with my kit, how do I scale up accordingly? Do I increase all the grains (as in pale, crystal, roast). I take it the flaked maize for head retention?

Has anybody tried torrified wheat along with flaked maize or just try one or the other?
