Brew Your Own Magazine included a recipe for Newcastle Brown in their May-June edition this year as 1 of 5 british beers.

They said it is actually a blend of TWO brews - an Old Ale and an Amber Ale.

OLD ALE:
9 lbs Pale Ale Malt
2 lbs 8 oz Flaked Maize
1 lb 5 oz Crystal Malt
5 oz Chocolate Malt
0.75 oz Roasted Barley
8.25 AAU Fuggles Hops - 60 mins
1.25 AAU Kent Goldings Hops - 15 mins
Whitbread Ale Yeast - Wyeast 1099 or White Labs WLP017

AMBER ALE:
5 lb 2 oz Pale Ale Malt
12 oz Crystal Malt
8 oz Flaked Maize
0.75 oz Roasted Barley
5 AAU Challenger Hops
Same yeast as the Old Ale

BYO say to blend 2 gallons of Old Ale with 3 gallons of Amber Ale.

Just realised BYO have based the recipe on the lightweight pints the yanks drink so you will need to increase everything to get our British Mansize pints.

For those wondering the other 4 beers in the article were:
Fullers London Porter
Bass Pale Ale
Youngs Special London Ale
Youngs Double Chocolate Stout

When I have tiome this evening I will post these recipes also.

Let me know if you use the above and how it turns out as have not yet tried it.

Don't forget Newcastle Brown is a vatted ale the strong component of the beer must be matured in a vat ie a barrel or secondary fermenter for at least a month before mixing with the weaker beer.

Here's a 5 US gallon recipe from clone brews (scale up accordingly). Might not be as authentic as the one posted above but the recipes in this book that I have tried have come out very close. You might want to do your own IBU calculations (Beersmith etc) as the recipes here depend on pellet hops which are more potent. It also says scale down to 5 HBUs of bittering hop if you're doing the all grain. If extract, use the bittering hops stated in the recipe and use 2.6kg of light DME instead of the pale ale malt.

5US Gallons (18.9L)
OG : 1.048 - 1.051
SRM: 23
IBU: 26

4kg pale ale malt
57g 55L crystal malt
57g Chocolate malt
28g Black malt

23g Target @ 8% (6.5 HBU) 60 mins
14g East Kent Goldings 15 mins
1tsp Irish Moss 15mins

1st choice yeast: Wyeast 1098 British Ale yeast

I read that they had printed these clones and I tried to get hold of the Youngs Double Choc Stout.

If you could specifically post that recipe it would be greatly appreciated. I think they had both a AG version and an extract didn't they? Personally I would prefer the AG version :)
