northdown?
northdown?
I've got a load of Northdown hops, so am going to make a single hop northdown brew, would this be nice? im thinking about 4.5kg pale malt..and maybe crystal? I've never used it before so how much would you recommend? also is there a generic standard hop schedule that could be used in any brew? cheers.
Re: northdown?
In Marc Ollsson's book there's a recipe for 'Northdown Wonder'. It's mentioned here in this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19536&hilit=northdown+wonder

Here's one I prepared earlier:

This came out great. It was quite sharp early on though - but I think that was the Amber. If you replaced it with Crystal instead it should work well. I find that about 150 - 250g of Crystal works well with 5kg of pale.
As for hop schedule, I like this one for Single Hop beers, it originally came from Gurgeh and has given me excellent results:
4:5 BU:GU ratio - so about 40 IBU in a 1050 OG beer
Get half of the bittering from First Wort Hops - so for the above, calculate 20 IBU worth
Get the other half from a 15 minute addition - the other 20 IBU - normally about double the amount of FWH by weight if it's the same hops
Then bung in a good amount - 25 to 50g - for aroma at flame out (this won't affect the bitterness)
Are the Northdowns from McToon?

Re: northdown?
cheers lads. the hops arent from mctoon, but ive found I have pratcitcally a full block of them leftover, so while money is tight for the next couple of weeks, if i can spend about 7 quid on some malt which I can just about do, i'll have something to brew/drink till i get my loan
. Looking forwards to this, they smell delicious.

Re: northdown?
Yep, I'm in the same boat - £20 to last me till April now... Fortunately I'm doing a brewing degree so I can nick malt from the brewery and claim it for 'research' purposesi'll have something to brew/drink till i get my loan![]()
