Festival Mild.

Post by Robdog » Mon Jan 26, 2009 10:19 pm

Its been years since ive drank Mild and this one seems nice and full bodied with a decent ABV. Plus it was my late dads favourtie drink so i can brew one up and have a pint for him.

The recipe states to add sugar to the boiler so i take it i just add the sugar at the start of the boil. Does when you add the sugar have any baring on the taste of the beer? Does it matter what sugar i use?

FESTIVAL MILD George Gale Portsmouth.

25 litre batch OG 1054 ABV 4.8% 140 units of colour 24EBU

MARIS OTTER PALE MALT 4854 gms
CRYSTAL MALT 165 gms
BLACK MALT 168 gms
TORIFFIED WHEAT 114 gms
SUGAR 280 gms added to boiler

HOPS boil time 90 minutes

FUGGLES 64 gms

Add 10 gms GOLDINGS last 15 minutes.

Priming sugars also used.

Yeast of your choice.

This is an excellent mild, well worth doing.

I would add the sugar halfway through the boil and to make sure it does not cause any burnt flavours on the element I would dissolve the sugar in a pot with some of the run-off from the mash tun.

The recipe in GW is as below:

Maris Otter Pale Malt...5000g
Crystal Malt...180g
Black Malt...295g
Torrefied Wheat...115g
White Sugar...285g
Start of Boil
Fuggles..70g
Last 15 mins of boil
Fuggles...10g

That's for 25 litres. Have done it and it did not disappoint. :D

Hi Guys,

Quick question, how can this be considered a "mild" with an OG of 1054? I thought milds were in the 1030's range?

Cheers,
Paul

milds can be quite strong, as well as the lower gravity ones you mention

I think mild is referred to as mild due to its lower IBU's than bitter, rather than it's actual ABV strength.

Original it was called mild as they where not stale or age ales, which allows any % alcohol and level of IBU's
