My experiment is now underway. (Bitter)
Never experimented much with homebrew, except for adding a little extra to kits, such as aniceed or liquorice.
Anyway. Bought a Young's bitter kit and added: Muntons Foil Pack Spraymalt Medium 500grm
1/2kg white sugar.
250g Crystal malt.
1/2 packet of goldings.
I boiled up the crystal malt and goldings for about 20 minutes, strained into my barrel with the young's and rest of ingrediants.
Keep my fingers crossed now and see how this pans out.

Did you actually boil it with the grains in the pot or did you remove the grains after a while and then boil?

what i did was boil 250g cystal malt and half a packet of those vac packed hops (golding) in water for 20ish minutes, then just strained off the liquid and added it to my barrel which had the youngs bitter in and the sugar and the water.floydmeddler wrote:Did you actually boil it with the grains in the pot or did you remove the grains after a while and then boil?
ive got a feeling now though ive done something wrong, but its too late as its fermenting as we speak.
what is the likely outcome here have i made a pigs ear of this?

It's a rather unusual method but I have a sneaky feeling that you might just get a good beer out of this.

Boiling grains is generally not advised, usually they're just steeped at 70ish C water, however you may get away with it.

Sounds like fun

Re: My experiment is now underway. (Bitter)
thats a relief, having never experimented before with grains and hops i just hope that this first try works for me. I know its trial or error but as long as im on the right lines im sure i will get better with experiance.mysterio wrote:Boiling grains is generally not advised, usually they're just steeped at 70ish C water, however you may get away with it.

So far in my Extract Brews I have 'always' boiled my grains... I've not had any off-flavours yet.
