Young's hops... annoying

Post by floydmeddler » Tue May 19, 2009 7:40 pm

Hi all,

I have, lots of times, purchased Young's hops both vacuum packed and their cheaper 'bagged' hops. Why do they not print the alpha acid content on the cheaper hops? Is there any way of finding this out? It's ridiculous! Got a bag of Cascade through the post and am f*cked now because I don't know the alpha acid percentage! :x

Cheers

Yeah that is a bit crap not giving the percentages, as a ball park figure if you used 6-7 % (6.5 probably) you'll not be too far out nearly all the cascades i see are in that sort of ball park.
If you are still unsure though you could simply avoid using them for bittering and instead use them as late/finishing hops were the alpha acid content isn't as critical.

Cheers Delboy. Have Target for bittering and as you suggested, will use the Young's for flavour and aroma. Damn they smell good! :D

They just straight Goldings. When I emailed them recently, they told me that the alpha acid is 4%.
