Bishop's Tipple - new recipe?

Post by Jerry Cornelius » Mon Aug 17, 2009 10:30 pm

Has anyone tried a Bishop's Tipple brew with the new type recipe. Had a couple the other week and quite liked it, I fancy doing this for a winter beer. It's not like the original, but TBH it's so long ago since I had one, that I can barely remember what it was like - seem to remember that it was darker in colour, but the taste escapes me after twenty odd years!??

Anyway, would be interested in opinions/recipes :D

The recipe changed some years ago I think - the current version is brewed by Wadworth whereas the old one was an Ushers. There's a version in Dave Lines book for the original, but no idea if it's close to it - looks much darker than this though!

The current one according to the Wadworth website (I quite like this too! I rarely find it on cask, though I managed to get a pint of it at the start of the month :D )

94% Low colour Optic
6% Cane sugar
Colour: "16 units"

38-42 IBU from Saaz and Styrians
One third of the total hops go into the hopback, so I'd expect a large late addition in a clone recipe. No real idea on the ratio of Saaz to Styrians though - the rest of it is probably reasonably OK to estimate, though obviously you'd need to make an educated guess at yeast strain, and you don't know the OG/FG without measuring the SG from a sample and working backwards with the ABV...

Cheers coatseg. I don't think I have enough experience at the moment to be able to make any sensible estimates, besides I think I might have to taste another couple to remind myself of the taste!

I'll probably give the DL one a go first, although he lists molasses and I couldn't find any in ASDA at the weekend.
