Suggestions For a Stout
Re: Suggestions For a Stout
Well thats the FSoS done. I had a taste of the first runnings and was very impressed with the flavours in there.
Part of me is wishing that I'd done 10 gallons of the stuff.

Just about to order my grist now... Hmmm sounds mouth watering.. .Cheers Garth!
Re: Suggestions For a Stout
Did this the weekend myself, but due to a leaky unsupervised chiller, ended up with 35 litres instead of 25,
OG was still a healthy 1040, but reboiled it for sanitary purposes, and added more hops for the extra batch size.
Does anyone have an opinion on if I will get away with it, or am I gonna be seving a very watery stout(could detect much roast flavour frim the og sample!,
I may brew another batch next weekend for a copmarison, but I reckon having 60 litres in the shed may cause marital distress!!

Re: Suggestions For a Stout
Still waiting on H&G to deliver.... Will continue with Barley Bottom for my non-bulk from now on...
Re: Suggestions For a Stout
The FSOS is going down a treat and as I have some Carafa 3 left it would be foolish not to put another stout on.
There was talk of using hops other than Cascade. Has anyone brewed this with other hops that have improved on the drink or should I stick with Cascade ?

Re: Suggestions For a Stout
Why not experiment, I've heard of hops more suited to lagers being used in stouts.
I bet Amarillo would produce some interesting results.

I bet some German Lager hops would be interesting.

Re: Suggestions For a Stout
Now theres a dilemma.
Use the Amarillo that I was planning to throw into an all amarillo pale ale or use some in a stout. I'll have to look through my hop stash and see what takes my eye. Will report back on the results.
I also have a load of Saaz so could try these

Re: Suggestions For a Stout
I'm mid-mash on my second FSOS and have decided to go with the same recipe as before but ferment at the lower end for Nottingham at around 16 degrees. My last batch was fermented at indoor summer temperatures and turned out great so it will be interesting to compare like for like.
