Phool's Gold - Recipe Critique.

Post by Philazarus » Mon Sep 28, 2009 5:08 pm

Hi All,

I am attempting my first AG recipe and was wondering if the wise and the good among you would take a look and see what you think. I was after something approaching a Badgers First Gold using only First Gold Hops, but as this is only my second go at AG anything drinkable would make me happy.
I based the recipe on a cobbling together of http://thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewtopic ... &sk=t&sd=a and the only other AG I have done which was Dave Line's London Pride. I left in the Demerara sugar, and upped the Pale Malt by 10% from Dave Line's Recipe as my mashing efficiency was not great last time at 68% so I thought it would give it a little more poke. I had to drop the dry hop quantity as i only have 100g of First gold :( .

3850g Pale Malt
100g Crystal Malt
250g Demerara Sugar
21g First Gold [6.2%] 90 min
49g First Gold [6.2%] 15 min
30g First Gold [6.2%] Dry hop. //Wanted 41g but only have 100g total

~23.2 IBU, ~4% ABV, 23L Volume

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I made something similar way back in Jan and it turned out great,
heres what i did.

3500g MO Pale Malt
120g Crystal
200g Wheat
30g First Gold @ 60 mins AA 7.5 %
20g First Gold @ 20 mins AA 7.5 %
10g First Gold @ 10 mins AA 7.5 %

Total IBU`s 31.31
OG 1040 Final OG 1007 = 4.5% ABV

Thanks Haz66,

What does the wheat add to a brew?

I think maybe 30g is too much for dry hops if in around 5G. Perhaps 10g?

I think you might be right SiHoltye. Looking at some of Dave Line's recipes (my only book on the matter) he only really uses 10g at most.
I would like to replace the sugar too but I struggled mashing this volume of grain in bag in my Bruheat boiler and keeping it off the element when adjusting temp of the mash.
