Amarillo Single Hop Single Malt Pale Ale - What do you think

I have been playing with Beersmith and come up with the following recipe for my AG#2:

Amarillo Ale

Type: All Grain
Date: 24/09/2009
Batch Size: 15.14 L
Brewer: Stephen Franks
Boil Size: 17.34 L Asst Brewer:
Boil Time: 60 min Equipment: My Equipment
Taste Rating(out of 50): 35.0 Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.00
Taste Notes:

Ingredients

Amount Item Type % or IBU
3.40 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 100.00 %
22.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (60 min) Hops 26.3 IBU
22.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (15 min) Hops 13.1 IBU
20.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (5 min) Hops 4.8 IBU
20.00 gm Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (0 min) Hops -

Beer Profile

Est Original Gravity: 1.053 SG
Measured Original Gravity: 1.010 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.014 SG Measured Final Gravity: 1.005 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.15 % Actual Alcohol by Vol: 0.65 %
Bitterness: 44.2 IBU Calories: 90 cal/l
Est Color: 9.6 EBC Color: Color

Mash Profile

Mash Name: My Mash Total Grain Weight: 3.40 kg
Sparge Water: 13.25 L Grain Temperature: 22.2 C
Sparge Temperature: 75.6 C TunTemperature: 22.2 C
Adjust Temp for Equipment: FALSE Mash PH: 5.4 PH

My Mash Step Time Name Description Step Temp
60 min Step Add 7.50 L of water at 73.0 C 65.6 C

The batch size is correct as my brewpots are smaller than normal. What I am hoping for is a very citrusy floral ale, American style to be served very cold.

Any critiques welcome!

I want to brew this tommorow, and I have the following "in stock" of hops/malts if you think it needs tweaking:

Goldings 50g
Amarillo 100g
Fuggles 30-40g approx
WGV 70g approx

Marris Otter 4.5kg
Amber Malt 1kg
Crystal 600g approx
Black Malt 550g approx
Roasted Barley 500g
Wheat Malt 500g
Torrified Wheat 600g approx

Your recipe looks great and will make a fantastic beer. I might be tempted to add about 3 % wheat malt to lighten the body a little and give it a bit of head retention, but that's just my taste. You could also skip the full boil hops and add the bittering hops at 20 min onwards. Wouldn't have to change much except add a few more Amarillo (should have 16g left)

Whatever you do; with those ingredients, it will be good.

21 g ararillo - 10 min
21 armarillo - 5 min
21 g armarillo - 1 min

Efficiency - 80%
O.G:1.052

Great - thanks guys! I shall take both posts on board. I didnt know what wheat malt was for actually, saw it and bought it for stock.

I shall take photos this time and post in "brew days" with the decided recipe

Best wishes

Stephen

I made a MO / Amarillo beer to a similar OG but with 55 IBUs.

It gave a citrus beer with a grapefruit type of bitterness. Perhaps too bitter for some.

I think you'll get the beer style that youre after.

Recipe looks interesting, but what's the deal with Amarillo? Is it pretty similar to Cascade when used in isolation? I love that grapefruit Cassie flavour... is Amarillo as aromatic? I've thrown it into the mix with Mount Hood, Cassie and Centennial a few times (different recipes) and always got something punchy out... but when I threw it in with First Gold on a recent batch I've got a strange bitter after-taste. My suspect is a dodgy batch of First Gold, but I was wondering if the 'overtly bitter' tones might be a characteristic of the Amarillo.

All power to you for focussing such efforts on one hop for that brew though - I hope it works out well!

I just had a sample (fermentation finished at 1015) and it smells very nice, but very bitter as you say.

I will keg and condition and update you.

Amarillo always tastes more orange marmaladey to me. Goes nicely with Cascade.....

Simcoe for bittering and amarillo for flavor and aroma is fantastic.
I'm just here for the beer.

Oh yes. I've got this one fermenting away now and it smells and tastes divine. Simcoe for bittering and Amarillo and Cascade for flavour & aroma. 96 IBU and should be around 8% or so....

I had a taste of mine yesterday - still too young I think...

I force carbonated it, and I have a chrome tap. No1 The tap leaks when the pressure is too high, and No2 it comes out as foam. Useless for more carbonated beers I think. I will have to get some 3/16 beer line I suppose?
