Lager Hops Question

Post by softlad » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:00 am

I'm planning a lager for this weekend to keep SWMBO happy.

My previous lagers have used Hallertauer and Saaz but I'm thinking about a Saaz only lager.

Would I notice a difference in flavour using all Saaz ? I tend to use 50/50 HH/Saaz for bittering and then Saaz at 10 minutes.

I doubt it very much. As long as you stay away from hops with a distinctive flavour profile you should be fine. . . . I used to use Pacific Gem for bittering as at 18% alpha I could get away with using a lot less Saaz . . . My last bohemian Pilsner used 500g of hops . . . which absorbed an awful lot of wort

Thanks Aleman

Thats the thing that was nagging me. I think I'll stick with my current recipe and may look at what I have in stock for the 90 min hops and reduce the Saaz
