American IPA
American IPA
Ive done a few APA's and just tried some Punk IPA so thought i'd step it up a little and come up with the recipe below. I'm not trying to clone punk IPA just a bit of using up what i have and trying to get something in a similarly hoppy.
5400.00 gm Pale Malt
200.00 gm Flaked Barley
200.00 gm Torrified Wheat
100.00 gm Caramalt
50.00 gm Amarillo [9.50 %] (90 min) Hops 46.7 IBU
25.00 gm Amarillo [9.50 %] (15 min) Hops 10.8 IBU
15.00 gm Centennial [11.90 %] (15 min) Hops 8.1 IBU
25.00 gm Amarillo [8.50 %] (Aroma Hop-Steep)
15.00 gm Centennial [10.00 %] (Aroma Hop-Steep)
Est Original Gravity: 1.057 SG
Bitterness: 65.6 IBU
Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated.

Re: American IPA
I would put the Centennial into the bittering position and push the extra Amarillo into aroma. What yeast are you using?

If you haven't already bought it, the 05 I mean....then Nottingham will do pretty much the same job for you and its usually cheaper as well as dropping clear at a faster rate.

I would double all of the late hops if you're wanting a real hop blast

Re: American IPA
Yep, would agree with that, in my recent Polish hopped American type IPA I stacked up 300gms of hops with an AA between 8-11% throughout the boil.mysterio wrote:I would double all of the late hops if you're wanting a real hop blast
I do like hoppy beers mind.

Re: American IPA

Re: American IPA
If you want something with a similar bitterness as the punk I think you may be on the high side with that IBU.I'm not trying to clone punk IPA just a bit of using up what i have and trying to get something in a similarly hoppy.
Would anybody concur or dispute that the punk is not that bitter?

Re: American IPA
It is quite bitter, but it has an above average sweetness to balance it I reckon. 65 IBUs... maybe not that high.
Re: American IPA
okay doo........ for a 10gbl
11kg pale ale malt
1.5kg lager malt
mash@66 for 90 min(although in the comercial one ive been toying with 60 and 70 mins)
@90
28g of cascade(7.5%aa)
28g centennial(11.75%aa)
@30
18gcascade
10g centennial
@20
14g cascade
14g centennial
@10
1tsp irish moss
28g cascade
28g centennial
@steep
60gcentennial
obviously treat your water for use with a pale ale.
this is a little different than the 10bbl brews i do as ive had to play with the hops and addition timings to get it to work on the bigger scale but this is the receipe i came up with for my 10 gal kit
hope you like it!its for hop heads only, and guaranteed not to be liked by certain grumpy buggers on the site!

Re: American IPA
Nice one cheers!
Actually it's very similar to the last AIPA I brewed... very nice although the hop flavour/aroma seems to degrade pretty quickly
Could just be 'palate fatigue' from drinking two pints of it every day

Re: American IPA
Hi thanks for the replies. The hops in the recipe are all i have so it looks as though i don't have enough to do the IPA properly. I think i'll adjust the grain bill and ibu's for something around 4.5% and 35 ibu with all the hops above for plenty of flavor and aroma and hopefully something that can be drunk young (i'm a little short on beer).
I got the 65 IBU from brewdog's website where they also quote a OG o 1.052.
