First AG - Help with recipe
First AG - Help with recipe
Right I'm nearly ready for AG#1, should be there after a weekend of finishing bits off...
I have managed to accumulate a little bit of stock and would like to use a recipe using what I have, although fetching one or two other bits is not out of the question...
As for style, I love Sheperd & Neame Late Red, and things such as London Pride, and really don't like the Badger ales - far too fruity for my liking
The only yeast I have is Muntons Gold, however it's only a 1o min drive to get S-04 or Nottingham etc if you feel this would make a big difference??
(Looking to brew 19-23l)
Right the stock
Marris Otter 6kg
Marris Otter light 3kg
Crystal Malt 3kg
Crystal Malt light 3kg
Cara Red 3kg
Amber Malt 3kg
EK Goldings 113g
Fuggles 113g
Target 113g
Challenger 113g
Not too worried about it being a complicated or simple recipe, want to hit the ground running so give me your best shot!
Cheers
James

Re: First AG - Help with recipe
James, your choices are endless will all those ingredients, pop round your HB shop and pick up GWs latest book, spoilt for choice, happy brewing
Re: First AG - Help with recipe
As McToon says - loads of options there! With Graham's book, you'd have a fair few recipes to choose from too.
I like Challenger and goldings as a combination myself (as well as many other combinations...), so perhaps 91% Pale, 3% each of crystal and light crystal and the other 3% amber. Make it about 1040-45, and then challenger to bitter to about 34IBU. Add 1/2Oz EKG at 10min and at the end of the boil.

Graham's book is worth getting. Norm's recipes converted from the real ale almanac might be a good place to look if you don't have a book to hand.
London Pride
Maybe something with 95%MO and 5% regular crystal (3.8kg and 200g to make roughly the right abv) hopped with target and challenger looking at that?
Summer Lightening uses ingredients you have and would be nice for the warmer weather

Thanks guys, sound really good!
Will be getting Grahams book asap, but it's not in stock locally, so I'm on here scrounging for a recipe this week
keep the ideas coming, I'm sure they'll all get a look in over time!

Re: First AG - Help with recipe
If i were you i'd go for something pretty simple as it's your first.
Perhaps:
4000g MO
300g Crystal (400 or 500g if you like it sweeter)
20g Target for full boil
20g EKG (or fuggles) for 10 minutes
Munton's Gold
See what you like about it and branch out more next time.
I'm a firm believer in never paying for any information once you have the internet.

Re: First AG - Help with recipe
Hi James, I very much like Late Red too.
I know it's the wrong time of year for Late Red but I was drinking it in the Two Brewers in Rochester High Street last night.
If you ever work out a recipe that comes close to it, let me know and I'll do the same.
Cheers,
Andy.

That sounds real good. I brew a bitter a little lower O.G. than that but close. It is really! good if you grow goldings (like I do) and can toss them in straight from the vine.
I'm just here for the beer.
