Safbrew WB-06 What if anything can i make with this lot

Post by pas8280 » Thu Jul 01, 2010 6:45 pm

Ordered a packet of WB-06 with my last grain order without thinking ahead what i could brew with it, so your help is required fellow members.
I only have a 17L max brew run and dont have the facilities to do a proper lager but i do have plenty of Maris Otter and a Kilo each of the following Munich Malt, Vienna Malt, Wheat Malt and Lager Malt. in addition i have 100g of Hallertauer (Mittlefruh) hops and some Mount Hood.
I was thinking along the lines of a Wheat beer when the temperature drops to the usual UK level (below 20c) but dnt know if i can bulk out the 1K of Wheat Malt i have with the other grains or what would work best etc Any idea's / recipe's greatly appreciated.

Its not a lot of wheat, but you could try

1kilo wheat
1kilo lager
vienna malt
the rest of marris otter to bump it up to the %abv you want with
Hallertau 20 ibu overall
with a healthy dose of hallertau at flame out 25 grams or so.

So not very wheaty normally the american style is 50% of lager and 50% wheat
German version is 70% wheat and 30% lager malt
Not sure about Belgian version never made one

Good luck

My Wheat Beer with WB-06 is drinking well in the sunshine or late... Chill it down over night in the fridge, sit in the sun and Enjoy :)

Can yuo get some more wheat? I wouldn't really call it a wheat beer (or use a wheat beer yeast) when less than a quarter of the grain bill is wheat.

TBH, the flavour of wheat malt isn't that different to barley malt. The main difference with wheat beers is the yeast you use.

Obviously wheat malt does make a difference (head retention etc) but I reckon you could make a surprisingly convincing no-wheat wheat beer just using barley malt, the right mash schedule (a rest at 40-45C etc) and a proper wheat yeast.

That's quite strong for a wheat beer but it shouldn't cause any problems. I usually aim for 5% ish. You could increase the water or decrease the grain.
