Thought i would try this, how do you think 10l apple juice + 10l of water + maybe 1-2kg of sugar + 2 packets of cider yeast + whatever ever other ingredients, such as tea etc...
The point i'm making is not use 20l of AJ, partly to save money and also incase the brew goes wrong. I am assuming the sugar will keep the alcohol content at the right level 5-7%. But how you do think it will taste, will it be like watery cider or will the amount of sugar i add produce an undesirable taste?
Homemade cider
Re: Homemade cider
It will be dry as hell and virtually tasteless.
But it will make you drunk.

Re: Homemade cider
Why do you say that, it is the same ingredients as any cider expect i'm using half water / half AJ and maybe 0.5kg more ordinary sugar. I assumed it would just be like weaker cider.dave-o wrote:Meths would be cheaper and probably tastier.

Re: Homemade cider
Without it being all cider you will basically water the apple taste out.
You could just make a kit. you can picjk them up at wilokos.
you could substitute most of the fluid for juice and then add water. this would mean you still maintain the apple taste.
If you check the OG after it is all mixed up, you can either add diluted sugar or not depending on how strong it will be

Well, if you fermented water and sugar you would get alcohol, but it wouldn't be nice. It's not tasteless either, it has a depressing kind of taste that is hard to describe.
Taking your idea further you could get two bottles of apple High Juice (or the supermarket equivalent), mix this with a a few gallons of water and a bag or two of sugar and frement this. It would be cheap, would have an apple taste and would get you drunk.
I think the point is that neither will be very pleasant. Even all apple juice (assuming cheap, from concentrate) will not be that nice, unless you get quality apple juice or press your own.
That said, this business is about experimentation, so go for it and report back.

Re: Homemade cider
If you do want to do this, I would make yourself up half a gallon first just to make sure your not wasting 10ltrs of the stuff.
Just to chime in that from my experience the better apple juice you use will give you a superiour product. I also use honey instead of sugar.

Re: Homemade cider
Just use the AJ and minimal sugar ( about 250g ) I have learned the lesson with too much sugar, as the AJ has natural sugar which will produce 4.5% - 5% its not really needed, one pack of yeast should suffice
