Not sure where to put this, here seems as good as any. Is there a list of must have or useful beer/winemaking books any where on forum? If not what would anyone suggest getting hold of ( please cover all styles of beer/winemaking plz).

There is a thread entitled 'essential reading' which in itself makes quite good reading...

Graham Wheelers Brew your own british real ale is a must for extract/ full mash.

Especially if you are just starting out, I don't think you can go past "How to Brew" by J. Palmer, pretty much got everything you need and should remain a useful reference for years to come.

The first edition of How To Brew is available free (with the author's permission) online here:

The newest edition is substantially more details and obviously up to date but credit to John for giving away the first edition. He even grants permission to print it out for personal use.

I've said it a lot but Randy Mosher's Radical Brewing is excellent. Easy to read (actually readable as opposed to a load of numbers) and countless inspirational recipes. It's the one I reach for when I'm a bit stuck for inspiration.

Very true, I'm just about to bottle his 1822 London Ale (recreation), the ginger, orange and coriander in a standard-English-type ale should be interesting.
