Munich/lager malt pale ale

Post by Spud395 » Wed Aug 04, 2010 9:46 am

So I drove by a HB shops yesterday and bought some stuff off the top of my head

Now I need to put it to good use!

I've 3 kg Munich malt
3kg Lager malt
1 kg wheat malt
1 kg crystal

As for hops I've got

Fuggles, challanger, EKG, target and Hallertauer Mittlefruh

I was thinking 50/50 lager/Munich, 10% crystal, might not add any wheat

Maybe just EKG? reasonably lightly hopped 15ish IBU

What I'm trying for is a pale easy drinking ale, that maybe a miller drinker would like

What do you think?

Munich will give more flavour than a "Miller drinker" would be able to stand!

Recipe looks OK. IBUs seem excessively low even for an easy drinker though.

You could make an october fest style 'ale' with that lot... IBU's are low...

I'm sure I've seen Goldings and Hallertau used - aim for 26 IBU (Which is what an October fest is)

Should be better balanced with the maltyness from the Muncich malt...
All this said this is only from what I've read as I want to brew an Octoberfest beer in march (2011) and ahve done a bit of reading up on them...
:)
No reason why you couldnt make an ale using a similar grain and hop bill...

Ok, bump up the IBU's to mid 20's.
Also discovered some Saaz hops

Now do I go with EKG or Saaz/Hallertau

Must look at the octoberfest style

I added about 10% of vienna and munich each to my lager and the taste came out very malty. Its very nice and has that sweet malty taste, as well as a fuller mouth feel. However, it is not your clean and light thirst quenching lager and the munich does add a distinct flavour to it.

Made an extract earlier this year, bittered with challenger and used hallertau late. Turned out one of my best to date after a few weeks conditioning.
