Hey Guys

This is one we brewed up at the weekend, for some reason we only ended up with 18l in the boiler at 1.048 which is a lot less than we were aiming for, dont know why the efficency was so low, only in the early 60's

Beer Engine says that that grain bill will produce an SG of 1.054 so perhaps your efficiency was down? As for your low volume post boil, you can expect to lose approximately 10% per hour to evaporation then allow for hop absorption and dead space in the boiler, so its just been a slight miss calculation there. Did you allow for dead space and hops? With my set up I allow 3ltrs for these but it will vary from boiler to boiler and of course the amount of hops you use.

Sounds Hoppy though! does it taste good?

Havnt tasted it yet, smells great tho,

I stated with about 28l, mash and sparge, allowed 1 litre per kilo of grain loss and 10% boil off, didnt take into account hop absorbtion, that must have been the reason for the low volume, will have to allow for this in the future

i can lose nearly 3/4 of a barrel in hop absorbtion on my hoppiest brews at the micro. its definately something to be aware of

Does Beersmith calculate hop adsorbtion?

Is their any rule of thumb as to the amount of hops used and the amount of loss od wort?

I tend to use vacume packed hop leafs all the time

I calculated that I lose about 40ml wort per gram of hops (whole hops, not pellets). Your hop bill comes out at 56g so you can expect to lose just over 2L wort. Of course there will be some variance across systems but that's my general rule of thumb.
