What might this taste like?

Post by soupdragon » Sun Jan 09, 2011 5:42 pm

Hi all

Any thoughts on this simple recipe?

2kg Pale Malt
1.5kg Light Dried Malt
35g Target for 90 mins
35g Chinook for 20 mins
30g Chinook for 10 mins
35g Chinook at 80c
Safale us-05

I'm after a light refreshing beer with a good hop flavour that lingers in the mouth......
I also have some Amarillo and some Bobek to play with. The dried extract is there due to boiler size limitations :(

Cheers Tom

Done a bit of research and now I'm thinking of swapping the Chinook for Amarillo as I'm after something a bit fruity

I would Tom, Chinook is a nice hop in a best bitter earthy sort of taste but Amarrillo is fantastic in a pale or blonde very fruity steep plenty at 80c to get the aroma :)

Hi Paul

Do you think Amarillo is an acceptable alternative to Nelson Sauvin? Fell in love with Thornbridge Kipling a while ago on a weekend away with the missus but not been able to find any round by me :( Got another break planned next week to London so I'm hoping to find some in the Euston Tap ( sister pub to the Sheffield tap where Kipling is a permanent beer ). :)

Cheers Tom

Its not a bad alternative NS has its own unique taste and smell (cats p$*ss) Amarillo is somewhat more suptle in its own way many have done IPA's with it to great effect i did a an IPA with cascade, Chinook and Amarillo as a finishing hop took a while to fully mature but it reminds me somewhat of Thornbridge Jaipour :) give the Amarillo a go with quite a bit late on if you can spare it

Hi Paul

Only had Jaipur once and it's a fine brew too, doesn't feel like a 5.9% brew when you're drinking it does it?
Do you think I should cut down on the 20 min hops and add them at 80c? I've got 100g to play with by the way....

Cheers Tom

Hi Tom its personal choice really because you will lose ibu by dropping the 20 min addition i usually compromise a little and do 15mins 5 mins then 80c steep
just had a look at my Nelson sauvin pale ale brew and i did lots of small additions from 25 mins and a big 50g hit on the 80g steep so it is as i say personal choice.

I could always up the Target to 40g? Do smaller but more frequent additions make that much of a difference than a lump at 20 and 10?

Cheers Tom
