All Grain - Double IPA - Second Attempt

Post by kaymak » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:02 pm

Hey Lads,

Brewed this one up at the weekend. Tried something like this a couple of months ago but it got infected and had to bin the lot

Here is what we done

Batch Volume - 23l,
Boil Volume - 26.5l
OG 1.082
IBU - 80
Boil Length - 60 min

5500g Maris Otter
500g Caramel 145ebc
500g Munich
1000g Sugar

60 - Chinook 15g
55 - Chinook 15g
50 - Chinook 15g
45 - Chinook 15g
40 - Amarillo 10g
35 - Cascade 10g
30 - Amarillo 10g
25 - Cascade 10g
20 - Amarillo 10g
15 - Cascade 10g
10 - Amarillo 10g
5 - Cascade 10g
0 - Amarillo 10g
0 - Cascade 10g

Used White labs Calafornia Ale yest.

Gonna dry hop with between 50g and 80g of cascade pellets for 10 days.

Only ended up with 18l in the fermenter, I'd say the hops soaked up a load of wort

That hopping schedule is for someone who gets bored easily....
It's a bit of a waste really. Stick more hops in at the start to get your IBU then do a massive late hop with the rest.
Chucking those small amounts in all the way through is just going to interrupt the boil.

80 IBU is probably about right for the OG, but it's not a style of beer I will ever come to love.

Cheers Boingy,

I was looking at using the same method as dogfish head use in their IPA's, although I haven't the facility to continuous hop, I thought I would hop every 5 minutes to get the full spectrum of bitterness, flavour and aroma,

Had a look at the fermenter this morning. fermenting like crazy and the smell of sweet wort and American hops is filling the apartment. Im loving it but I don't think the other half is too impressed. :)
