Beginners Stab at a Hoegarden Clone (Extract, partial boil)

Post by Greendan » Thu Sep 22, 2011 1:06 pm

So, this is my stab at a Hoegarden Clone, it's the first reciepe I've put together (and have done so to keep my Missus sweet about all the home brew equipement I'm buying).

The recipe is based on various ones I have found over the net, and adapted to what I can get hold of.

Any advice you have to offer would be great.

For a total of 10 Litres.

Ingredients
Rolled Oats - 250g
Crystal Malt - 250g

Light Malt Extract (DME) 500g
Wheat Extract (DME) - 500g

5g Northern Brewer @ 60mins
4g Saaz @ 30 mins
5g Saaz @ 5mins

1tsp Orange Curacao
1tsp Crushed Coriander

S-33 yeast

And for the process:
Heat 3.5 litres of water to 65C. Put the Oats and Crystal Malt in a grain bag and steep for 30mins @ 65C. Remove Grain bag and add Both DME's, stir and bring to boil. Once boiling add 10g Northern Brewer @ 60 mins. Add 4 g Saaz @ 30 mins. and 4g Saaz, Orange and Corrianter at 5 mins.
Remove from heat.
Add 7 litres of water to fermenting vessel and add Wort. Pitch yeast.
Ferment 7 days.
Bottle and condition at least 14 days.
Drink.
Bask in brownie points from Missus.

I am concerned that I am using too much Nothern Hops @ 60 mins? Also, how Much yeast would you add?

Any advice you would like to give would be appreciated!

That wheat extract will be wheat malt extract, whereas you want unmalted wheat for Hoey. Without that it won't have the light haziness that Hoey does.

You could perhaps add a little flour to the mash, but honestly i don't think you'll be able to make anything like a Hoey with extract, unless you partial mash some unmalted wheat.

I'm sure it'll be a nice beer though.

Ah...Unmalted wheat. Erm, is it possible to get that as an extract?

It's a really nice and simple brew, let us know how it goes.

No, hence my suggestion of a flaked wheat partial mash.
