Heeley Green - Green Hopped Dark Ale

Post by Gricey » Wed Oct 19, 2011 8:09 pm

So after some discussion, I wanted to brew a beer that would show the flavour of the hops that I have harvested from Heeley City Farm. They are organic WGV, I got about 730g of them!

Turns out that wet hops are about 5:1 as effective as pre-packed try hops. I had a go at testing this out by making a hop tea. Christ it was horrid. Anyway, I took Graham Wheeler's Pedigree clone and dicked with it somewhat, I can't leave anything alone :-) So instead of table sugar, I've used candi sugar, and I've upped the hops somewhat, including a flameout and dryhop addition.

Here's what I came up with:

Heeley Green
Brew Length: 25L

4kg Maris Otter
800g Amber Candi Sugar
100g Black Malt

290g Green Organic WGV @ 60m (equivalent to 58g): 35.1 IBU
95g Green Organic WGV @ 10m (equivalent to 19g): 4.2 IBU
125g Green Organic WGV @ 0m, 30m steep (equivalent to 25g)
125g Green Organic WGV @ 2d (dryhop, frozen for now) (equivalent to 25g)

Water treated using GWs calculator to be Burton-on-Trent Ale

90m boil
60m mash @ 67ºC
2 Sachets of Danstar Nottingham
Ferment for a week @ 20ºC

Estimated OG: 1.040
Estimated FG: 1.008
Estimated ABV: 5.0%

It's a nice dark brown colour, a great autumn beer I hope.

Brewday underway, pictures will follow!
