Will this recipe work ok for a Lager?

Post by Tattie bogle » Sat Feb 04, 2012 8:26 pm

Hello, never brewed a lager before but planning to have a bash tomorrow. I'm not fully prepared as far as ingredients go but wondered if the following recipe would work out ok (as I have these in). What to people think? Or should I hold of and get some proper lager malts? Cheers!

Fermentable Colour lb: oz Grams Ratio
Pale Malt 5 EBC 9 lbs. 6.1 oz 4260 grams 86%
Munich Malt 20 EBC 1 lbs. 1.4 oz 495 grams 10%
Torrefied Wheat 4 EBC 0 lbs. 6.9 oz 195 grams 4%

Hop Variety Type Alpha Time lb: oz grams Ratio
Saaz Whole 3.3 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 2.5 oz 70 grams 100%

Final Volume: 25 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.050
Final Gravity: 1.012
Alcohol Content: 5% ABV
Total Liquor: 35.4 Litres
Mash Liquor: 12.4 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 85 %
Bitterness: 23 EBU

I think I'd use Lager malt rather than your Pale Malt, if there's any difference, but I've no real experience of lager from grain either.

I did do a sort-of Pilsner a few weeks ago using Pilsner Malt and a lager yeast, but it's still lagering & I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. If it does come good it'll be very strong and very dry

Looks like a pretty good one to me. Unless you are using only one grain with low IBUs and a nuetral yeast you'd be hard put to tell the difference between pils malt and pale malt.
I'm just here for the beer.

It depends how authentic you want it. What you have there will make a drinkable, lager-like pale ale that will be better than most of the stuff you get in the shops.
If you want the dryness and paleness characteristic of a lager though, you probably want lager/pilsner malt.

Well I gave it a bash. Not too fussed about it being authentic, I'll be very happy if it turns out better than what I normally buy in though!

Have it fermenting at the moment, trouble is the temperature in the back room is possibly too high (at ~16C) but my utility room is probably too cold at the moment (~9C), I've opted for the warmer option until the cold weather passes.

Cheers
