Aussie hops
Aussie hops
Hi Guys,
Has anyone used Summer and Stella, the aussie hops?
I used 250g at flame-out in a mild recipe (50/50 mild/pale to 1.055) and aroma wise... I cant get a single hint of of anything!
Are these just too mild and gentle for a malty beer?
I also used the stella for bittering, has anyone used these hops further up the boil? what do you think?
cheers
Alex

Re: Aussie hops
Hey buddy I just brewed a golden ale with summer and it has a very delicate flavour when I tasted it before bottling I just thought boring bland but it was at room temp and flat I tasted a bottle last night and a fair bit of improvement with a bit of carb and cooled down a bit a definite taste of melon not overpowering but delicate kind of think that I am going to like it so hopefully you see an improvement and I see you used a lot more than me but I agree not much aroma

Cheers YouAintSeenMeRight...
I forgot to add that it was 100l brew-length... I think i have other problems that arnt helping the summer much, possibly too much mild malt, its quite sweet. And possibly not enough hops in at t-15, im going to move them around...
But maybe use a handful of stella at aroma time... i like my beer to smell of SOMETHING
Cheers for your words!

Re: Aussie hops
Yep, used Stella before. Used 90g in a Pilsner (5% fermented with S-189) and got soft stonefruit/apricots and a good aroma. You could definitely taste it.
Also tried Bridge Roads Summer Saaz IPA and deffo got a citrus/spicyness from that.
Put it this way - single hopped beers with these varieties are good!

Re: Aussie hops
I found my 250g at flameout was a waste of good hops!
Goldstar - when did you add your stella?

Re: Aussie hops
I used Stella in an American Wheat and found it to be quite subtle, not "in your face" like Galaxy or Topaz. Anyway, it's good to see that with the rise of our local Craft Brewing industry the local hop producers are diversifying away from good ol' Pride of Ringwood (not knocking it, it has its place in Aussie Pale Ales etc)
Re: Aussie hops
alwilson,
I added the Stella at 60, 45, 20, 10 and a cube hop addition (similar to a 80degC steep).
I used 80g for 20 litres to about 35ibu from memory.
Cheers,
Goldstar

Re: Aussie hops
I did a heavily late hopped beer with Stella, I didn't like it. It tasted harsh for quite a while and there was a nondistinct spiceyness from it. That said It might have aged into a nice beer.
