NZ Pale Ale Recipe
NZ Pale Ale Recipe
Hey Guys. I have some Riwaka and Motueka hops just begging to be used in something light and hoppy ready for the warmer months ahead and came up with the following idea for a brew.
The Carahell is there as it needs used up. Its quite a straightforward grain bill - does it need anything added? I have the usual munich, crystal, wheat etc in stock that could be used if necessary....
NZ Pale Ale
Brew length: 25l
Original Gravity (OG): 1.045 (°P): 11.2
Final Gravity (FG): 1.011 (°P): 2.8
Alcohol (ABV): 4.42 %
Colour (SRM): 6.2 (EBC): 12.2
Bitterness (IBU): 26.7 (Average)
88.61% Maris Otter Malt
11.39% Carahell
20g Motueka (8.1% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes (Boil)
30g Motueka (8.1% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
30g Riwaka (5.4% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
50g Motueka (8.1% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
30g Riwaka (5.4% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
1/2 tab Protofloc @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
Single step Infusion at 66°C for 75 Minutes. Boil for 75 Minutes
Fermented at 18°C with Danstar Nottingham
All comments gratefully received as ever.
Cheers!
Jim

Perhaps a smidge of wheat malt? Apart from that looks a belter.
I've finished my motueka boohoo, never tried riwaka.

That will be awesome, Motueka is just mind blowing! I planning something similar for a summer ale in acouple of months. Personally I would shoot for 40 ibu if you had some more hops to spare, but that could just be my personal taste.
Re: NZ Pale Ale Recipe
I have more Riwaka and I am tempted to order more of the Motueka as they are only £2.37/100g....

Re: NZ Pale Ale Recipe
interesting, shame I'd have to spend £20 but blooming good prices

Thats the catch I am afraid. They don't currently vac pack and this is why I went down to Malvern to check out the hops before I bought them. The guy that runs the site works for Farams so he knows his hops but I pointed out to him that UK buyers would expect vac packing.
The £20 min order thing is a bind but I wonder if they will look at this if you need them to..

Re: NZ Pale Ale Recipe
I'm wait while the next NZ ship comes in, try and buy 5kg.
Re: NZ Pale Ale Recipe
Had a bit of a tweak with this recipe. I found a bit or Caraamber so added that and upped the bitterness slightly to compensate. Also added the dry hopping with more Riwaka. Hope to be brewing this on Monday and if the weather forecast is right I will be sheltering under the garage door as usual.
