I think this is likely to be AG#7. Time to change from numbers to names i guess. Names are hard though?
Just waiting for my hops to arrive. :)

Naaa, just come up with any old bollocks. There ya go! 'Any Old Bollocks' :D

Part of the fun of it - coming up with good names.

If it's strong and dark - stick 'Old/Owd' or 'Winter' in front and alude to strength - as in 'Old Horizontal' or 'Winter Wobbler' or as the Southern Germans do with double bocks (Doppelbock) suffix it with -or or -us as they have with Salvator, Kulminator or Aventinus. You could have Propagator, Fornicator, M*sturbator, Godhelpus, etc.

Lager? Katzenpissenbrau. preferably with umlauts over the first 'a' and the 'u'

I am going to make this also but unfortunately my local home brew shop has not got any Challenger hops. What would be a suitable alternative.
Thanks

Theres another shop about 1/2 hrs drive from me so I will go there. I just like to use this small local place when ever possible. I always come out of the other place spending more than I should. :D

Er, i did but i ommited the sugar as i had no idea what sugar to use. Bit like saying 5kg malt. What malt? What sugar?

It's only been in the bottle for 2 weeks, is drinkable but a bit nondescript and rather weak. Good Hop flavour and aroma though. Exactly the right colour though. :)

Oh Chris, you're in a mischievous mood! It's a valid question - refined sucrose, dextrose, brown, demerera, muscuvado, corn syrup, invert, partially inverted (golden syrup), candi sugar of various shades, treacle, molasses, honey, lactose, fructose. All sugars, most of them different.

Personally I usually ask someone when making coffee, particularly if they are into coffee, if I have white, brown, muscuvado, or demerera, or any combination thereof in the cupboard - which is usually the case.

Tanglefoot? Sucrose or invert, I'd reckon

It's safe to assume that unless otherwise stated if a recipe says sugar it'll be plain white table sugar, there's next to no difference between using that and brewers sugar or invert sugar except a modest difference in gravity. In the small quantites used in English ale recipes it wont make any difference.
'Small quantities' doesn't apply to Marston's Pedigree, of course.

I know most sugars in recipes would normally mean white sucrose but sometimes -
it doesn't, also a novice might get caught out if he reads 'sugar' and decides to chuck in Muscovado.

I take it from this that Pedigree is more sugar than AG ? Actually thinking about it I seem to remember making one from Dave lines recipe and it did have a fair bit of brown sugar and barley syrup.....

what does the 'no compromise' commercial product use then?

Not sure of the exact usage, but it's a white sugar - wether brewer's sugar, invert, or whatever, and in a fair quantity - I'd guess at 15-20%
