Scottish Red Ale - thoughts?
I've been foutering around this recipe for a nice red beer for the summer/Autumn, but I haven't got much experience with the speciality malts, so perhaps some more experienced minds might weigh in?
I'm aiming for a good, sweetish malty beer, with just some token bitterness to balance it out a bit. Along the lines of Williams' Cock O The Walk.
Here's what I've got so far:
2.92 Kg Maris Otter (58.2%)
841g CaraRed (16.8%)
501g Crystal malt (10%)
501g Munich malt (10%)
248g CaraAroma (5%)
15g Newport 11% AA 90mins
20g Bobek 15mins
15g Bobek 5mins
10g Bobek at Flameout
White Labs Edinburgh yeast
How does it look? (Ignore the obscure measurements, I'm using Beeralchemy on my phone to tweak it!)

I'm interested in something similar, what brew length is this?
I am "The Little Red Brooster"
Fermenting:

Drinking: Southwold Again,
Up Next: John Barleycorn (Barley Wine)
Planning: Winter drinking Beer

I usually get a 23L brewlength; Beeralchemy is set to make recipes for 25l pre-boil, 23 at pitching.

Thanks I like the look of this so will put it on my ever growing list. Looks more like a Winter beer so maybe September for this one.

Welp, this is now churning away happily in the fermenter now, will post details when it's done.
Annoying, my kettle elements both gave up the ghost at around 70 mins of the boil, before I could add the 15m and 5m additions; so the hop schedule now resembles 25g of Bobek at flame out. Bugger! Ah well, it'll be interesting.

Cheap Curry's style, if I recall. Ah well, they've lasted long enough. Just glad I got over the 60min mark before they gave up!orlando wrote:Dack wrote:Welp, this is now churning away happily in the fermenter now, will post details when it's done.

Both. Would they be cheap Tesco/Asda style by any chance?

A pretty impressively dark red; I'll see how it looks after the primary is finished, with pics, but I reckon I would fiddle the malts around some next time. Possibly less Munich, more Caraaroma?Skittlebrau wrote:How did the colour come out, Dack?

Definitely interested in pictures. I've been wanting to brew something red for ages, looking to steal a grain bill that works from someone else's recipe!
