Belgian aromatic in a bitter??

Post by stringy » Fri Apr 27, 2007 2:57 pm

hi,
I recently brewed a dark Belgian ale, but over-ordered the Belgian aromatic by a factor of ten (ooops!!). I now have 1.5kg that I would like to use up.
I am about to brew some bitters for the summer. However I am not really sure how well the aromatic malt will work, or how much I could get away with using in a bitter.
I don't really think I can get away with more than 500g in a recipe, - about 10% of the grain bill)

How does this recipe look:
4 kg Pale malt
500g Belgian Aromatic
100g Crystal Malt
30g Willamette for 60mins
20g E.K Goldings for 15 mins
10g Goldings for 5 mins.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have used 250g of Belgian Aromatic and biscuit in my strong ale and worked out very nice, I have seen a number of America which calls for victory malt which is supposed to be similar to Aromatic malt.

I would start out with 250g and see how you like it, a little goes a long way.
