okok here it goes im trying all my odd end`s of grain and putting into beersmith to come up with something, and come up with this what you think:

44l batch
Ingredients
Amt Name Type # %/IBU

8.63 kg Pale Malt, 83.4 %
0.42 kg Carafa II 4.0 %
0.42 kg Crystal Malt - 60L 4.0 %
0.36 kg Brown Malt 3.5 %
0.20 kg Roasted Barley 2.0 %
0.20 kg Wheat, Torrified 1.9 %
0.13 kg pale Chocolate Malt 1.3 %

28.83 g Magnum [14.00 %] - Boil 60.0 min 22.0 IBUs
48.05 g Cascade [5.50 %] - Boil 20.0 min 7.9 IBUs
48.05 g Cascade [5.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min 4.7 IBUs
40.00 g Cascade [5.50 %] - Aroma Steep 80c - 20min

was thinking of up-in the crystal to around the 7% mark mashing at 67c.. you think im going in a good direction

Looks pretty good, a lot of grain complexity, but at very low percentages overall, tons of American grapefruity essence, should be a prototypical American IPA. Got any more chocolate malt? Might be fun to take it a Brown IPA direction and dump lots more of that in. Got any other hops to round things out a bit? Any form of Goldings, maybe?

it is quit dark with these amounts of malts

Est Color: 60.3 EBC

i might reduce the amounts of cascade by 10gs on the 20-10 mins additions, grapefruity essence and dark malty finish might not go to well time will tell im brewing it on week end

Personally, I'd drop the brown malt and roasted barley and make the chocolate 20%. Don't be afraid of the dark!

Again, this is just me, but I'd use equal amounts of Cascade and EKG at 30 minutes remaining and again at flameout. The idea is to still emphasize citrusy aspects, but no longer a one-dimensional grapefruit bomb, it should now have layers of well-balanced zesty citric tartness, earthy, flowery, apricoty notes. Can't you imagine with that grainbill? A sublime whack-it chocolate orange beer. Mmmm...
