One was a big white snowflake type set up with long white spikes in all directions up to an inch long. The other was a small flat red wrinkled thing which was about the size of a small pea.
Big White Snowflake and the Wrinkly Pea is a great name for a band but neither of them sound like something you want to put in your precious wort.

After seeing the starter I expect fermentation to be problematic and attenuation low. The reason being that the yeast likes to flocculate so much.
Several times I gave the flask a shake and the yeast layer broke up into slabs, kinda like crazy paving. Left another 24 hrs it was the same again.

The yeast was plated from a bottle and then a single colony transferred to two slopes, when established the two slopes then put in a 300ml starter which after 4 days put into a litre. Three days later drain the wort and pitch the concrete. Not very scientific I know but I have not a clue how many cells there are.

Anyway, 16 hrs in, I dont know when it kicked off I was in bed. Its currently 2" thick but has a nice dome shape to it so think it has a bit to go. Fingers crossed its as tasty as the starter. :)

Looks like a good start but then so did mine. If you can be arsed to take daily SG readings that would give some useful clues as to how it's going. I have read about forced ferment tests to see where a brew should finish with any given yeast so at some time I must start doing this.

Super FG for a Porter, certain to be a mighty fine beer.
