An interesting discussion, but I think you boys across the pond are looking at this from a purely American perspective. Traditionally the IPA was made with just kettle hops and maybe a handful of late additions to make life a bit more interesting, but maybe not. The complex hop bill in your recipe seymour or the continuous hopping of the west coast IPAs is not a traditional English IPA at all. Although a lot of current home brewers in the UK, including myself enjoy the American hops and a complex mix of late additions, traditionally we like our beers big and bitter and if you are fortunate enough to have a look around any UK city centre after midnight on a Friday or Saturday night you will also find that with regards to "doable" once the beer goggles are firmly in place we will "do" anything after a few pints of anything. :D

You're probably right. I thought the OP's original request was for a modernized double-strength IPA simply replacing the grapefruity American hops with English ones in order to showcase their flavor and aroma distinctions. Why don't you go ahead and post an alternate recipe in-line with your conception?

Seymour's right - my intent was to produce something that goes in the direction of an American Imperial IPA, but with English hops

I'd be equally interested in a more traditional recipe though.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
