Sovereign Hops

Post by pas8280 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:11 am

Hi all i have been given a small amount of Sovereign Hops (along with some Pilot) I intend using them in my next brew along with Munich Malt i was wondering if anyone had used these Hops in a recipe and if so as a single Hop brew or with others (i have quite a few to blend with them) I have searched around a bit but they seem like quite a new noble variety my understanding is that they impart a nutty flavour ? any info or recipe idea's would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sovereign A new hedgerow variety with excellent brewing quality, Sovereign is a true ‘English noble hop’ which can be used to good effect as a substitute for,or to blend with, Fuggles, Goldings, Challenger etc

Pilot Very new high alpha hedgerow variety hop It Has A good aroma and alpha properties

Hope this helps a bit

Thread hijack!

But it's an old one.... So here goes:
Anyone brewed with these or tried any commercial ales with this hop?

I hear it was bred as a higher alpha disease resistant fuggle replacement...
I tried a pale ale with it some elgoods jubilee beer, that SWMBO bought me for fathers day...
I liked it, slight tangerines and subtle spice... Nice :)

Any help appreciated

Apologies for the double thread hijack, but has anyone else used Sovereign at all, or have read any of observations over what has been noted above?

In my search for interesting British hops I picked up some Sovereign to experiment with. Not entirely sure what to make with them.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Just used them in a loose copy of Hydes Mild but not enough to get the alleged 'overtones' of passion fruit that some websites mention. Still got around 70g left and was thinking of using them as I would fuggles. While not a bad hop, I don't think it's anything spectacular either.

Thought the remaining batch would go in a blonde or golden ale to see if there really is something to get excited about.

Cheers
