Realising I am likely to face the wrath of the forum, I am not a fan of beer with curry. For me it has to be a ice cold lager, and not a flavourful one either like Cobra Tiger etc. either but something along the lines of carling/carlsberg. I want to taste chilli/tomato/corriander and don't want anything to interfere with that.
Dives for cover...
While we're on the subject, I prefer red wine with turkey and I find that dessert wine never actually compliments a sweet dessert #-o

I like lager to be nicely hopped, but Pinot Noir with turkey is very popular.
Sommeliers recommend that you swirl a glass of wine and inhale its bouquet before throwing it in the face of your enemy.

The whole point of cobra is a dull lager like carlsbegr/carling but with less carbonation. Same with Tiger, they are mass produced pale "lagers" all the same, just slight differences on a theme

Beer pairs much better with spicy food than wine imo, of course you have to find thr right beer - I urge everyone to try a modern mild with your favourite curry, it pairs great with many of them. Especially the British Indian ones. Much better than lager or IPA which a lot of people suggest for some reason - bitterness does not go well with spice imo

Coincidentally I just read about this very topic by Michael Jackson, Beer Hunter, the other day:

Well looks like the experiment is over unfortunately - they have started selling alcohol again (weaved through the reasons is some quite interesting psychology) so tonight I had two particularly terrible draught Cobras! I would like to try the "Ultimate Curry Beer", but information on it seems a little hard to come by on Google...

It became quite clear straight away that this is all very very subjective, particularly when you consider the vast array of flavours that make up the many many meals that we just blanket call "curry" (see also Rick Stein's excellent series that has been shown since my original post)

My conclusion for what it is worth is that I prefer something lighter, malty didn't seem to really work for me, strong is a definite no no - any stronger than a Cobra is not suitable for guzzling during a quiet meal with the wife on a school night! Less sweet seems to be the way to go, perhaps not dry per se, something middling. Hopping is an interesting subject however, I didn't experiment too much, I don't think heavily hopped is the way to go though as you are already looking to be bombarded by spice and flavour!

All in all though, this was a great chance to try something different, a fine reason to try brewing a different style, incite a healthy debate... and all while someone else does the washing up

Thanks for the ideas!
