Post by daddies-beer-factory » Sat Dec 21, 2013 9:51 pm

Hi to all Jims Beer Kit,
I've only been brewing just over a year( AG # 12 ) - but I have produced an excellent beer that I wanted to share, really enjoyable less than 3 weeks on ( 2 weeks in FV, 1 week in bottle)

50 L brew length

10 Kg Maris Otter
500g Crystal Malt
500g Torrified Wheat

Mash temp = 68 C - 90 mins
Yeast Nottingham

Hops

90 mins - 33g Goldings, 33g Fuggles, 33g Challenger

45 mins - 33g Goldings, 33g Fuggles, 33g Challenger

15 mins - 33g Goldings, 33g Fuggles, 33g Challenger (protofloc)

OG = 1050 , FG = 1013 , Mash PH 4.8/5.0 (need to raise it next time)

any comments welcome ? :wink:

ps - thanks to all the help/advice from members on here, getting to this stage !

Looks like a nice, chewable pint with some nice hopping :) my AG#1 went into the keg a few days ago and I just couldnt wait - I drew a pint from the FV and chugged into it :lol: .... wow ! what a level above kits !! :D

Only gripe with it (and probably down to my changing tastes) is that I didn't quite put enough hops into it ! I'm hoping that a little carbonation and conditioning will help them pop more but it goes down sooo easy - and at 5.6% that might be a risky thing !

Hey :)

If you live in the Lewes area, I probably drive past you about 10 times a week :lol: - im a multi-trade builder /electrician working for a housing association and we have a lot of properties in the area. Agreed, its a fair ol' drive, but it helps when you do it in a company van on a fuel card ;)

My next brew is going to be my take on Old Golden Hen by Morelands - and I wont be taking it easy on the hops this time either (bought about a kilo from another member here a while back) as I adore galaxy !

Seems odd that AG#3 looks like its going to be an RIS - and Im going for a Party-Gyle brew too to boot (the fat malt bill is begging for another stout to be made with it and the RIS only takes the first runnings, so....) ! feel like im running before I learn to walk;

Toying with making a vanilla stout with the second runnings.

all sounds good - I work as a toolmaker so I reckon with your electrical/building & my engineering we should build a massive microbrewery between lewes & Rye !

only if we win the lottery ?

what brew equipment/vessels do you have ?

Ghetto equipment at the moment - 25l Brupaks type boiler (+ serving as the HLT), cool box mash tun and home made CFC. Finding the boiler a real bottleneck at the moment as it limits me to brewing short and strong with liquor back if I want a full 25l batch. Slowly getting the stuff together to go to propane now tho, with my eye on going to 50l capacity so I can brew 30l runs to fill my polykegs.

Tonight I modded my boiler with an extra double layer of foil/bubblewrap over the foil/foam insulation I had last time - the poor old boiler is only rated to 1.8kW and just doesn't have the kahones to bring 24l to a rolling boil; hopefully the extra insulation will help it limp to the finish line for AG#2. I even pulled the boiler apart to look if there was an element upgrade possible but 1.8kW is the largest the manufacturer offer, and I dont really want to cut the boiler to put another element in.

When I started the all - grain I only had 1 x 30 L burco & home made mash tun & had to do the old 1 boiler / hlt juggling vessel trick.

I bit the bullet & bought a 100l propane system from powell brewing - to make a 50 l finish product.

a great product - only critisism is no de - burring of bits / bobs ( precision engineer likes things de - burred)
