Hi, i usually brew more american style beers with a good whack of hops and tend to be about 5-8%!
Looking to do something to be ready for early summer which is light and 'hoppy'..something around 3.5 - % with lowish IBUs but good fruity flavours from the hops. I'd like to try throwing in some oats for mouthfeel as heard these can work well in pale beers - i want it to be light but not too watery.
Any recipe suggestions which people have found have turned out well?
Hops ive got (and want to brew it from these as want to use them up):-
Ahtanum - 25g
Cascade - 100g
Centential - 50g
Chinook - 30g
Galaxy - 20g
Any suggestions appreciated!

Re: Pale Ale with oats
i really like the look of that.
I am unsure about the oats as i havent brewed with them but i really like the look for the hop combo you have there.
If i was to change anything up on the recipe it would be to move the 15 minute additions to 10 minutes and pull the 0 min steeps to 5 minute additions.
This is very much personal preference as i have been getting great results with even just a 5 minute addition.
Keep us all posted with what you do.
Cheers.

Re: Pale Ale with oats
Thanks Barry. Interesting point about the hop additions..i have them at 0 mins so get lots of aroma but little bitterness but do you find you still retain a lot at 5 mins?
Yup never used oats either but i'd like to try as i've heard they give a really nice mouthfeel which i really want to get in such a light beer so compliment the hops.

Re: Pale Ale with oats
Don't fear the oats. I go up to 10%. I brewed this last september:
Maris Otter 95%
Crystal 2%
Porridge Oats 3%
OG 1.041 Bengal Lancer yeast
It was totally clear and ready to drink after a month or so with excellent head/lacing. Hops were all challenger 26 IBU: 16 IBU from 60 min and 10 IBU from 10 min addition, you'll probably want more.

Re: Pale Ale with oats
I've been using oats -malted and porridge in blonde ales for a few brews now and am pleased with the results, 350g is fine and will help body and smoothness
