Which hops to use
Which hops to use
Im looking to brew a (23L) massivley hoppy (brewdog style) pale using 1/2 M.O. and 1/2 Lager Malt. I have the following hops to choose from:
Simcoe 400g
El Dorado 350g
Amarillo (pellet) 200g
Citra (pellet) 200g
Wai-iti 100g
Brewers Gold 400g
Perle 3kg (yes a bit overstocked on those)
Dana 100g
Nelson 50g
Fuggles 100g
Multihead 100g
Progress 100g
Target 100g
Willamette 100g
Dana 150g
As you can see Im a bit of a hop magnet and Im looking for a brew that is similar to Brewdogs Dead Pony.
Any advice for a good brew welcome!
Cheers
Paul

Re: Which hops to use
Normski's three are the alleged Dead Pony hops. There's no sub for Mosaic, maybe mix some Amarillo/El Dorado/Brewer's Gold?
Re: Which hops to use
Cheers Clibit, the Dead Pony is my favourite BD beer but I dont have any Mosaic......may attempt that one when I get hold of some.

The Malt Millar has Mosaic in stock.

OK, decided to go with the following;
3kg Lager Malt
2kg Pale Malt
60 min mash @ 66 degrees
60 min boil
Hop bursting with
5 min - 50g Simcoe, 100g Amarillo, 50g Nelson Sauvin
0 min - 50g Citra, 125g Amarillo, 100g Citra, 75g Simcoe
Fermented at 20 degrees with US-05 for 10 days
Dry Hopped for a further 6 days with 50g Citra, 50g Amarillo
OG - 1.049 FG - 1.011 4.9% ABV
IBU came in at around the 60 mark
Have tried it now from the cornie and a very nice drink. Massive hop flavours coming through (no real surprise there lol) and very easy on the palate.

Re: Which hops to use
I would cry a bit inside if I spent that much on hops for one brew!

Cheers and gone,

Re: Which hops to use
Well if you feel like screwing around a little bit try double dry hopping. I'm in the middle of doing that to a Dogfish Head 60 type beer right now. My next little project is going to be a Pliney the Elder clone. I bought the hops for that online as a kit and it was only $15 (enough to make a 5 gallon batch). Right now, the local store is selling hops for $3 an ounce so since there is somewhere north of 12 ounces of hops in Pilney for a 5 gallon batch that's a damn good deal. This whole thing should be an interesting excercise and entertaining if nothing else.
Hops are currently making up almost 50% of the cost of a batch depending of course on what you are making. If you decide to make a bunch of hop bombs that starts getting expensive so I am staring to get picky about where I buy my hops because you can save some serious money buying on line.

Drinking:Saison (in bottles), Belgian Dubbel (in bottles), Oud Bruin (in bottles), Olde Ale (in bottles),
Abbey Triple (in bottles), Munich Helles, Best Bitter (TT Landlord clone), English IPA
Conditioning: Traditional bock bier, CAP
Fermenting: Munich Dunkel
Next up: Bitter (London Pride like), ESB
So many beers to make, so little time (and cold storage space)
