Yakima IPA
Yakima IPA
Had one of these last night from Great Heck brewery, bloody marvelous, great balance and low on the bitterness, anyone had a go at making something like this?
Re: Yakima IPA
It was indeed, deep and rich but nothing too over the top, very nice beer from a very humble looking brewery!
Re: Yakima IPA
Website says "Strong IPA with a blend of US hops – Citra, Simcoe, Cascade, Chinook and Amarillo. Strong West Coast USA influence, low bitterness, tons of fruity flavours and aromas balance a solid malt backbone." 7.4% ABV.
thebeercompany.co.uk says: "Full Tasting Note Deeply golden in colour, this American style IPA balances a rich malt backbone with intense, fruity hop flavours from the prodigious additions of late hops as well as being dry hopped during fermentation. Brewed as a cask version of an American, west coast style IPA, this beer is brewed without using any bittering hops, all the hop aroma and flavours coming from late hop additions during the boil and dry hopping in the fermenting vessel."
I haven't had it but I'm guessing they bolster the malt bill with something like Munich and maybe a bit of crystal, and then add all the kettle hops in the last 20 minutes and then dry hop. Lots of hops, lots of flavour, low bitterness. A method that's becoming more popular.

Re: Yakima IPA
To be fair the recipe will be pretty much the same as all these new IPA's, I have a recipe planned that is very similar to the ingredients you mentioned above Clibit, Munich, Crystal Lots of hops!

Re: Yakima IPA
If it's as balanced as it sounds the West Coast influence is not real strong. Most West Coast IPAs are much more hop orientated and it can be a chore to find a truly balanced American IPA. When I brew one I go for a good balance and I've given up entering them into competitions as they never score very well. I think the judges expect hop bombs these days in the IPA catagory.Clibit wrote:Website says "Strong IPA with a blend of US hops – Citra, Simcoe, Cascade, Chinook and Amarillo. I'm just here for the beer.
