Smithwicks Pale Ale

Post by Deebee » Thu Nov 13, 2014 9:23 pm

Just finished on of these. £5 for a bottle ffs!
It was actually great. According to the bottle the grist is 100%pale.
The vops are amarillo.
Any thoughts on hopping scedule or ibu? And idea on yeast.
Looks like a great late spring to summer brew

Yeah, an Amarillo SMASH (single malt and single hop) would be delicious no matter who brewed it.
Smithwick's is a Diageo brand, so they surely use the Guinness ale yeast, available as Wyeast 1084 or White Labs WLP004.

Am guessing ibu around 30?

Heavy lifting at 60 then smaller at 5?

Sounds reasonable to me. I'd probably split the hops into: 25% as First Wort addition, 25% at 30 minutes remaining, and 50% at flame-out...but it's all a matter of brewer's preference.

Ok. Yes it was smithwicks. Pale ale got it from a supermarket here in Kristiansund n Norway where i live. It is far better than the crap they make here .
As for prices welll err you ever been to Norway??
5 quid was the price or 50 norwegian kroner if you prefer it that way.

In order for people to comprehend prices more i saw a guy buy a pint of carlsberg at the airport whrn i travelled home weekend before last and pay 104 nok.. so just over a tenner.

Smithwicks is one of the blandest ales available in Ireland, in fact the most. My commiserations,

yes maybe... the thing is I am not a lover og the uber hoppy beers and not a lover of the highly citrusy hops ( more commiserations I hope:))

So this was ok, it would definitely suit most ogf the Norwegians I know who drink ice cold pilsner ( which is more bland than tap water:)).

So this, upped with slightly more aroma hops and served colder in the summer might be a winner in the Norwegian market here

Hanglow and daf, are we all talking about the same beer?

Deebee isn't talking about regular Smithwicks, the bland brown Irish Ale: http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/smithwicks-ale/6867/
Image

He's talking about their recent Smithwicks Pale Ale, an APA with delicious Amarillo hops, their foray into the craft-brewing market: http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/smithwicks ... le/155944/
Image

I haven't tasted it, I'm sure it's not as good as a true craft-brewed APA, but UK Pale Malt + Amarillo hops + Guinness yeast can't be all that bad, right?

aahhhh ok, I was thinking of the regular one. cheers seymour

I forgot that you were in Norway too Deebee, so I do understand how it was so expensive now

Not tried it, but Marstons et al can cock up any number of supposed decent combinations so I wouldn't put it past guinness. Especially considering how disappointing their recent Dublin and West Indies porters were

Still I'll try it if I see it

Amarillo is a lovely hop. I bottled a pale ale yesterday that had a good amount of Amarillo. A real good combo is bravo to bitter then Amarillo with a bit of simcoe at 6 minutes, steep, and dry hop.
I'm just here for the beer.

the dublin porter was watery and crap - draught guinness is better, and just think how many better guinness killers there are in the uk right now

the windies porter was a bit hoppier than the FES but you can buy FES for £1.25 a bottle form ASDA and it's better overall. So what the [censored] is the point?

So I wouldn't bother with either.

Spot the Amarillo :o ,when this beer first appeared I tried it and you could taste the Amarillo. As a pale ale it would not want to be too hoppy but as usual with Diadeo beancounters they must have hit the roof about how much expensive hops were being used so it was only given a lick of hops after the first launch. Thank god for tinternet which the beancounters must hate because they must have upped the hop rate again if you got to taste it. This beer will last only as long as Heino and Diageo figure out away to bring down the latest wave of beer revolution sweeping the land. They have form you know
