Bramling cross pale ale/bitter

Post by simon12 » Sat Nov 15, 2014 8:20 pm

I will be using bramling cross for the 1st time tomorrow in a pale ale/ bitter along with 50g EKG I opened last weekend. I was thinking to use only 60g bramling but an wondering should i use the whole 100g. Also was going with 4.5Kg MO and 500g crystal I could substitute up to 1kg MO with munich &/or add more or less crystal (ebc150) what do you guys think?

What did you do? I've used BX a few times in 5gal AG batches and it's great for some added fruitiness.
Used it with fuggles and, like you, with EKG. Both times I only used about 35g in total of BX. 20g at the start and 15 at flameout with similar amts of the other hop.
With EKG and Maris otter (4.5kg) with crystal it was very popular last christmas with friends and family. Threw in some sugar and a dash of roasted barley for a fruity red brew.
More recently MO with a mix of crystal and Munich (150g each) and BX with fuggles was a delicious bitter with a blackcurrant bite that i suspect was the BX. I like adding munich it gives more depth of taste, mouthfeel maybe the proper term.
As to whether all 100g is too much, it depends. Up front would be too bitter for me and all at flameout would blackcurrant and licorice it up. It depends on what you're after but BX is a good hop to try.
Would like to hear how this turns out.

Btw my BX had alpha of 7.6% if that qualifies my amts.

In the end I decided to max out on the crystal and bramling x so recipe was:
4Kg MO
1Kg Crystal
60 min 10g Bramling x
20 min 20g bramling x
15 min 20g bramling x 15g EKG
10 imn 20g bramling x 15g EKG
Hop steep for 30 min @78C dropping to 71C 30g bramling x 20g EKG
OG was 1.056 instead of 1.049 despite getting 2 extra litres which give efficiency of 90.3% which is way over normal so not sure what happened there. Will post results when I get a taste.
