Hi guys,
I've just went through my freezer trying to establish a user Upper hop bill based on what is open.
Based on an og of 1.058, I've determined the following%
Chinook - 22g for 60
Citra - 50g for 10
Amarillo - 35g for 5
Cascade - 40g for 5.
This should get me to around 70ibu which is perfect for the recent style of IPAs that I've been brewing.
I'm going to dry hop with 50g of Sorachi ace and 50g of Vics secret.
I've used Citra, Amarillo and Cascade together before and really enjoyed it.
I made a single hop Sorachi ace beer and i thought it was the weirdest beer I've ever tasted. I never got citrus at all, I was getting coconut more than anything.
Vics secret is another hop I've used only as a dry hop with a Nelson Sauvin, Pacific gem beer which I really enjoyed.
Any thoughts on the above?
User Upper hop list.
Re: User Upper hop list.
Nice looking beer. 70 IBU is a bit more than I would want in a 1058 beer (unless there is a lot of crystal or you mash high) but you know what you like.
I wouldn't add the sorachi ace. I just don't like that hop, the last thing I would want is nice bitter, fruity citrussy beer like you propose with a weird coconut/ lemongrass aftertaste. That would mess with the balance of the other hop flavours (my 2 cents).

Thanks for that killer, I've decided to omit the Sorachi ace.

I recently rated this Schlafly Hop Trial: Vic Secret, 6.5% abv, 45 ibukiller wrote:Have you tried a single hop vic secret beer...?
Aroma 6 out of 10, Appearance 4 out of 5, Taste 7 out of 10, Palate 3 out of 5, Overall 14 out of 10, Total 3.5 out of 5.
Tasted on tap at the Bottleworks in a nonic pint glass. Twice now, I must like it. It pours a mostly clear golden colour with thin but persistent white foam and lots of sticky lace. Aroma is nice but subdued: flowery, faintly resiny, herbal. The bitterness and flavour were bigger though: mysteriously weedy, strong vegetal notes in a good way, lemon rind, dandelion roots, tomato plant, a little rough around the edges but definitely different and pretty cool. Vic Secret is pitched as a Galaxy cousin and possible replacement. I don’t think so, breeding aside the brewing traits are not much like Galaxy at all in my opinion, but it is tasty in its own way. Getcha some.
