Hi, trying to put together a recipe for my nephews baptism. Trying to go for an IPA with a fruity hit. I've gone for;
1kg pale malt,
.5kg Crystal malt,,
.25 kg Amber malt
5g challenger for 60mins
1.5g citra for 60 mins
1.5g citra for 45 mins
1.5g citra for 30 mins
1.5g citra for 15 mins
Fermented with Nottingham yeast. Its going to be a 1 gal stove top brew. The figures beersmith has come out with are;
OG 1.070,
FG 1.016
ABV 7.14%
IBU 54.1
Don't know if I've gone too far and made it too strong. What's your opinions?
First recipe attempt
Re: First recipe attempt
Personally, for a fruity hit, i would remove all of the Citra additions and up the challenge to provide say 40 ibu then wallop in enough Citra at 5 minutes to take the ibu to about 60.
I would also allow for a dry hop too, about 2g/l.

Re: First recipe attempt
Yeah I agree. Late citra addition and a big citra dry hop will give you what you are after.
Re: First recipe attempt
30% crystal is too much. Would recommend reducing it to 5-10% and halving or removing the amber malt.

Re: First recipe attempt
I agree. Many people say no more than 5% crystal in an IPA, and I know from experience about 3% amber is perfect.legion wrote:30% crystal is too much. Would recommend reducing it to 5-10% and halving or removing the amber malt.
So, instead of: 57% Pale, 29% Crystal, 14% Amber, how about: 92% Pale, 5% Crystal, 3% Amber?
Best of luck with your brew!
