Special Bitter (Fuggles, Cascade & Styrian Golding)

Post by Monkeybrew » Sat Jan 24, 2015 9:11 pm

Finally getting ready to brew my first AG beer in nearly 4 months!

Needed to pull my finger out as my yeast is getting near it's end date, and so is my base malt.

I originally bought the Mild Ale Malt for a dark mild, but have since decided that I didn't really want to wade through 23L of it.

This is what I've come up with -

Special Bitter - 23L

4.000kg - Mild Ale Malt - 7 EBC (88.9%)
0.400kg - Pale Crystal Malt - 60 EBC (8.9%)
0.100kg - Wheat Malt - 4 EBC (2.2%)

55g of Fuggles Whole Hops 3.0% AA (FWH)
15g of Cascade Whole Hops 9.1% AA @30mins
25g of Cascade Whole Hops 9.1% AA @10mins
40g of Styrian Goldings Pellet Hops 3.7% AA @0mins

90min Mash @66C
60min Boil
75% Brewhouse Efficiency

OG - 1.042
EBU - 37
EBC - 17

Yeast - WLP002 @19C (1L starter)

Aiming to brew this next Saturday, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers

My 2p: a bit less crystal (200g) and some more pale malt. Maybe move all the Cascade to 15m. Any Styrians to dry hop with?

Recipe looks good. I did a similar 1.040 ale with 80% pale, 10% Carared and 10% Torrified wheat hopped with styrian goldings and cascade at 90,10,and 0 mins and dry hopped and really enjoyed it. If i am being critical of it I did over do the hops a little (200g of pellets in all) but it was my first attempt at dry hopping (i'd recommend it but perhaps not 60g as i did). I used US-05 and it was dry which allowed the hops to come through really well but i'd think mild malt and wlp002 would make a better balanced ale. Let us know how it turns out, here's a pic of mine:

Hi Monkeybrew

How did this turn out. Maybe a bit soon I know but on first impressions was it a good result?

I'm planning my next brew and I was thinking of something along these lines myself.

Cheers

This is what I actually brewed in the end, and I have only had a couple of mouthfuls from my keg, but it looked and tasted quite promising.

Trying to wait until next Wednesday (3 weeks) before I start on the keg, so I'll report back then.

Cheers
