Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
Providing my last, missing bits of tube appear through the post in the next few days, this weekend could finally be the last steps into the world of AG...
AG#1 is still going to be Old Jimbo's Bitter (as famously outlined in the all-grain section above by the man himself
) but i'm going to bump this one up to AG#2, followed by my Hurlimanns Clone in short order
As im limiting myself to 16l brew runs due to boiler restriction, I plan to try to get 2 brews in by this time next week.
I'll be working to my final mod of this recipe :
Cluck'd if I Know.... (Old Golden Hen Clone) (Blonde Ale)
Original Gravity (OG): 1.042 (°P): 10.5
Final Gravity (FG): 1.011 (°P): 2.8
Alcohol (ABV): 4.13 %
Colour (SRM): 4.3 (EBC): 8.4
Bitterness (IBU): 33.5 (Average)
97% Pale Ale Malt
3% Flaked Oats
1.4 g/L Challenger (6.1% Alpha) @ 90 Minutes (Boil)
0.8 g/L Galaxy (13.4% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
0.6 g/L Galaxy (13.4% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
1.9 g/L Galaxy (13.4% Alpha) @ 0 Days (Dry Hop)
0.3 g/L Irish Moss @ 10 Minutes (Boil)
Single step Infusion at 66°C for 75 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes
Fermented at 20°C with Seymour's Special - 50/50 mix - Nottingham/Windsor
Recipe Generated with BrewMate
(Modified to include Yeast Suggestion, a SHED load more hops and steel cut oats to conform to the seymoursgebot head retention laws
)

Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
Any news on this wonderful beer. I can't go into Tesco etc without picking some up, the wife then asks, 'can't you brew it?' a great excuse to get a hop order in. Expensive though the Galaxy hops are I think they taste superb in this.

Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
Still havent got round to it yet as I've had some teething troubles with my new AG setup which should be sorted soon
I also think that Patterd Ale sold me the entire Galaxy hop harvest in the UK a while back

Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
You can come round and use my set up!
G'luck with getting it sorted, I'm trying to find someone who'll sell me galaxy, no rinse sanitiser and crown caps all in one go or I'd have the brew on by now! Anyway 40 pints of nelson sauvin smash to bottle before that lot.

Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
I just had a bottle of Old Golden Hen last night, I hadn't seen it in the States until now. I enjoyed it, a nice basic golden ale base with loads of Galaxy hops, and who doesn't like trying-out an unfamiliar hop? I got strawberries, melon, lots of catty mint, faint tropical fruits and golden raisins...definitely worthwhile cloning if you're into that. I love when I find a beer which is predominantly flavoured by a single hop, it's very useful to us brewers in order to fine-tune our senses and inform our own recipes going forward.
But let's be perfectly honest... a shedload of Galaxy, more Galaxy and nothing but Galaxy comes out a little harsh and rough-around-the-edges, especially as the beer warms, right? And despite the strong carbonation, there was zero foam, head retention, nor lace after it subsided in the first 5 seconds. So, if you can't find or can't afford enough Galaxy hops to make a perfect clone of Old Golden Hen, I'm sure you could actually improve upon it (in my humble opinion, or at least round it out, smooth it out a bit...) with some additional, cheaper, more common hops and something like flaked oats, torrified wheat, or CaraPils/Dextrine malt.

Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
I believe it would be delicious fresh from a cask. I suspect mine was filtered, pasteurized, and light-struck. Why on earth do they export such a hops forward beer in clear glass bottle?!

Spot on!seymour wrote:I believe it would be delicious fresh from a cask. I suspect mine was filtered, pasteurized, and light-struck. Why on earth do they export such a hops forward beer in clear glass bottle?!
My Wife is not really a fan of ales because she finds most of them too bitter for her taste.
Saying that, she couldn't get enough of OGH on cask, but found it too bitter from the bottle.
You need to get yourself over here Seymour and sample some of our quality cask ales, trouble is you probably wouldn't go home!

Re: Moreland "Old Golden Hen" Clone
Yes, I did - using the recipe that I first posted. It wasn't an easy brewday, and an emergency situation forced me into a yeast choice that I lived to regret. The final product however wasn't like the Golden Hen I was trying to copy - the copy was richer, with a thicker body and the hops were a mile ahead of the galaxy in the commercial brew.
What I did obtain was an intensely fruity, flavourful golden ale with good body. one that I fully intend to try again with better yeast. Personally, I like the deeper body to the brew, but if you wanted to thin the body to more closely follow the Moreland brew, a yeast with high attenuation (maybe Notty or SO4) will work well. My next attempt will be with Winsor or WLP002 if im feeling rich
I think that Seymour summed it up well when he described the damage that pasteurisation, light strike, etc cause to such a hop forward brew in the case of the commercial brew - but if you love Galaxy, this was a fine vessel to showcase just what it can do

This is good to hear, I quite like this beer so will definitely try your clone. It is a nice refreshing beer, good to know it can be bettered
What pains me is I had several bottles of Hen's Tooth and drank it all without recovering the yeast
Anyway I have some fresh cropped yeast so will try them out.
