What to do when you don't have what you want!

Post by prodigal2 » Mon Jul 16, 2007 1:33 pm

Hi all, yet again I have been let down in my supply chain, and I don't have all the ingredients for the 2 brews I wanted to do this week

I currently have in stores:
16.5kg pale malt
4.5kg german pilsner malt
750grms crystal
500grms torrified wheat
500grms roast barley

21grms goldings(5.6%AA)
113grms Brambling Cross(7.2%AA)

I still have no IC and my hops order is currently in the ether :(
On the pluses my pale malt turned up in a 30l fermenter  So I buy my malt and get a free FV but at €40 for 30l I bally well hope I get something thrown into the deal

Anyhow to cut to the chase, what do people think I could do with this lot?

I'm currently leaning towards DRB's Brambling Beauty, and substituting the amber malt for crystal. But I'm hoping someone may have a better suggestion as I had hoped to do that as is!

Prodigal,

I wouldn't sub the Amber out of the Bramling Beauty, the Amber flavour is the winning feature IMHO.

How about a summer quaffer Pale Ale using the BX for bittering and the Goldings for aroma. I just ran the following quickly through BeerAlchemy, @ 75% eff:

5kg Pale Malt
30g BX full boil + 20g Goldings at last 5 min
S-04

5.2% abv
33 IBU

Any good :=P

Is that for a 23l brew length?, but it sounds great. and more to the point simple as this will be AG3

Volume At Pitching: 23.00 l Volume Of Finished Beer: 22.00 l
Expected OG: 1.050 SG
Expected FG: 1.013 SG Apparent Attenuation: 72.9 %
Expected ABV: 4.9 %
Expected IBU (using Tinseth): 33.8 IBU Expected Color: 4.8 SRM
Mash Efficiency: 75.0 %
Boil Duration: 90.0 mins
Fermentation Temperature: 18 degC

Fermentables
Ingredient Amount % When
UK Pale Ale Malt 5.00 kg 100.0 % In Mash/Steeped

Matt many thanks :)

When I get a few minutes I will scale to 16L brew length. (my current stockpot size)

The Brewname I'm thinking is :

Matts Zarzamora De Oro (matts golden(goldings) blackberry(brambling X))

If you are happy with that it will be knocked up in the next couple of days, all things being equal :)

This should take my mind of the brews I intended to make as the rest of my ingredients won't arrive till next month :(

For 16l

3.64kg Pale malt

22grms BX (full boil)
14.5grms Goldings(last 5 mins)

S04(may use nottingham)

Seem right?

Yep. The actual stats from BeerAlchemy are:

3.5 kg Pale Malt
24g BX
14g Goldings

(assuming 21 litres boil vol, 16 litres finished vol)
