Brown Malt, Mild/Porter Recipe - Help please!

Post by simmyb » Sun Feb 21, 2016 5:48 pm

Hi All,

I've got some Brown Malt that I bought on a whim a while ago. I'd like to give it a go in a dark mild or porter but have no idea on quantities etc. I'm looking for a nice malty mild or porter no more than about 4.2% or so. I've got lots of various malts and hops (I'm a bit of an impulse buyer!) but I don't mind buying other bits if you have a tried and trusted recipe.

Any recommendations gratefully received!!! Cheers! :D
Primary : AG138 Amarillo Pale Ale
Conditioning : AG137 Mosaic Pale Ale
Drinking: AG131 London Bitter, AG132 Yorkshire Bitter, AG133 Guinnish, AG134 Witbier, AG135 Challenger Pale Ale, AG136 Kveik IPA,
Planning: Perle faux lager

My standard low-ABV porter is 76% Pale, 12% Brown, 7% Crystal, 3% Chocolate, 2% Roast Barley, IBU to 36, single boil hop.

OK, so I've have built a recipe to those percentages, 1.042 OG, single bittering addition of Bramling Cross. Yeast is Windsor, Fullers or something not overly attenuating. ABV of about 3.9 or so? Waddya think?

The OG should be 1045 and OG 1012, will help give it a fuller body and mash at 68°C. The BC will go well with this beer.

You can take higher quantities of brown malt in brown porters. I am always running out of brown malt. Black malt OTOH I struggle to use
