Caesar Augustus India Lager
Caesar Augustus India Lager
I've been interested in this style for a while but not had the technology to lager. Not found an example that made me really sure it would be a big success. But in Scotland last week I had a couple of bottles of this from Williams Bros, and the second bottle in particular showed how good this style can be. Clean, soft and beautifully hoppy.
Their website provides this info:
BREW SHEET
Style: Lager / IPA Hybrid
ABV 4.1%
IBUs 33
OG 1041
Malts: Lager Malt, Cara Malt
Hops: Savinjski Goldings, Calypso, Citra
Now I have temp control I'm putting an India lager on my list, something along these lines.
Anybody got any good recipes?

Email the brewery, others have had good success in hints for a clone.
Their birds and bees is a great summer ale too.

I'm not after their recipe tbh, that info is enough for me, just wondered what malts and hops other people have used. And yeast.wfr42 wrote:Email the brewery, others have had good success in hints for a clone.

Re: Caesar Augustus India Lager
A very nice beer. I asked the brothers for a HB recipe and they obliged with an approximate recipe. I ended up using Chateax Pilsen 6RH (pilsner 6 row) malt 4.5 kg.
Hoped with:
Fuggles 20g, 70 mins
Amarillo 20g, 70 mins
Amarillo 20g, 0 mins
Citra 20g, 0 mins
Amarillo 10 g dry hop
Fuggles 30 g dry hop.
I actually did a double batch where I mashed once and boiled twice (9 kg malt) with the second being a double IPA version.
Used the Craft Series Yeast M10 workhouse. In hindsight I would up the dry hops to 50 g each. The brew was pretty nice, it got drank when it was quite fresh had a BBQ maybe 2 weeks after it was bottled. I think they said fuggles can be substituted with styrian Golding's or vice versa.
My OG for the single IPA was 1.044.
Let us know how you get on, its a very nice beer. Wouldn't mind an improved recipe after my first attempt. :)

Re: Caesar Augustus India Lager
Thanks Colin. Did they tell you they used Amarillo? Maybe they have subbed in Calypso, due to a lack of Amarillo. Citra and Amarillo is a lovely combination.
When I get round to it I will use a lager yeast at lager temperatures. Now that my brew fridge is finally, almost, up and running! If not I'd use US05 or try out the MJ California lager yeast, maybe, and keep as cool as possible.

All of Williams brothers beers are excellent. Blackball stout is probably the best stout I have had, only seen it on draught. Birds and the bees, Joker IPA and of course the mighty Caeser Augustus! Would also recommend shipwreck IPA from Eden brewery!

I also had the bottled Joker IPA and it was pretty good, but I much preferred the Caesar Augustus.colin.m.hammond wrote:All of Williams brothers beers are excellent. Re: Caesar Augustus India Lager
Interesting article on India Lagers for those interested.
https://byo.com/hops/item/2875-india-pa ... roundtable
"IPLs contain a similar hop characteristic as that of their popular, older cousin the IPA, but the lager yeast strain brings the character of the hops and malts even more to the forefront...IPLs go a step further because the best way to minimize yeast character and maximize hop flavor is with a lager yeast."

This is one of my favourite beers so really glad to see a Cline recipe attempt!
I can't do proper lagering now but I'm sure winter could sort that out

Re: Caesar Augustus India Lager
I read somewhere that it has a bittering charge of hops and the rest of the hops are added just before flame out. Williams Bros also say two weeks cold fermentation followed by at least 4 weeks lagering. So the hops quantities are the main unknown.
