Just to throw something in, here's an extract from the Durham Brewery newsletter on the subject:

[quote="Durham Brewery"]Please refresh my memory Steve. Why is it called lager? Some people don’t believe that lager is beer.

I’m glad you asked that, Sir John. Any fermented malt beverage with hops is a beer. This applies across the board to bitters, stouts, milds, barley wines etc, etc. Traditionally, English beers have been top fermented. Continental beers, since the 19th century, have been bottom fermented. That is, they use a bottom fermenting yeast, at low temperatures. Because of the low temperature they are slow to mature and have to be kept or stored for much longer than an English top fermenting ale. The German word for “to storeâ€

Just got back from Spain and I couldn't believe how tasteless San Miguel is. I even resorted to having a shot of lime cordial in it  just to give my taste buds something to get hold of.

You're going to have a lot of hops left in the freezer Delboy :=P

San Miguel is pants.
Where abouts in Spain did you go Matt? There are some OK beers in this country, but there is a shed load of rubbish too

I though Mahou Negra was nice when I had it two years ago

We had a quick break in Playa Blanca P2. Our daughter was with my folks so we hopped over there and had a nice chill in a villa with a pool - the routine was read book/have a beer/read book/swim … repeat for five days 8)

I tried the Mahou Negra funnily enough and thought it was quite good. Had some Royal Dutch - even my wife rejected that one. Also had some Paulenbacker (sp?) Pilsner which was quite good. The only snag was that wherever you ate out they only had SM.

Ahh thats Lanzarote isnt it?
I avoid SM like the plague, and use it as a excuse to hit the grape based beverages
Mahou is the best national brand in Spain.
And SM isnt even a Spanish beer by origin, it was originally brewed in the Philippines for Spanish expats. Now the beer is only made in Spain....I believe

Interesting factoid about San Miguel P2.

We were just south of Alicante, a bit Britsville, but fine really. My step brother in law has a place out there.

I'll give the Mahou a bit more of a go next time we go.
