Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
I was coming at this from the angle of 'Lager malt can convert about twice its weight of Unmalted Adjuncts' so having less than 50% Pils malt is going to make the Mash struggle a lot more than normal.
A 100% Wheat beer would be with Malted Wheat, not Flaked Wheat, and you'd still get worse Mash efficiency in comparrison to an all Lager/Pale malt mash.

... think I got confused with the steps. Jamil seemed happy with raising the mash from 50C to 67C in his recipe which is 50-50 but like you say to improve on conversion I think I should have decocted the mash. Just too much to be belleeding remember sometimes
Although the maltiness was up on the previous recipe the barley input was still down at 34%. Certainly makes life easier with it higher

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)

Hoegie is the pint glass and Dave-o's Garden is the 1/2 pinter

I would say that colour is spot on , mouth feel just a smidge thinner, but mine is a tad more bitter ...I think that it's the lime

But a bloody good brew tho

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Yeah the colour looks good.
Hoey's about oranges rather than limes (well, orange peel to be exact), but i think you know that anyway.
Glad it worked well for you. It's good for impressing people with, who think that this type of beer is expensive because it's hard to make or something. It's not, really!

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
just started drinking my hoegaarden clone. i cant tell the difference between it and the real stuff. well impressed .i used the yeast from a hoegaarden. 20g orange zest and 20g crushed coriander seed.
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Hi - I am new to this and am wondering how much water to use for the recipe on the first page to make the 23l - many thanks

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Well it differs from system to system, but i use:
Strike water: 20l
Sparge water: 12l
After boiling that works out at about 23l for me with a 4-5kg grain bill.

Hi folks
Just brewed another batch of this last night , 23l into the fv this time !
Have taken a gravity reading before I pitch the yeast and its 1.042 .... is this ok as my first attempt (half batch) came in @1.048 .
Thanks in advance
Andy

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Are you taking the reading at a standardised temperature?
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Taking it from a 200mm trail jar @20cdave-o wrote:Are you taking the reading at a standardised temperature?

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
If the grain %ages were the same then i can't see any obvious reason for the difference.
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
the way its sparged will give very different results with a wheat beer... sugars not so easily converteddave-o wrote:If the grain %ages were the same then i can't see any obvious reason for the difference.
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
just checked it again as I just got in ..its about 1.044 ....
As I'm a bit new brewing I take it that I didn't convert enough grains to sugar when mashing ?
If I pitch my yeast now how will it effect my beer ..... weaker abv % but still taste ok ?
Thanks for the help lads

I doubt you'll notice the difference between this one and the last one.
