Peter F Hamilton is a new author to me. Thanks for that he's going on the list. I am constantly on the look out for new authors. I just finished reading A scanner darkly again by Phillip K Dick. He really was the biz.

The candi rock is set. Its going into a fridge to chill for a day or so then its hammer time. Its great, tastes just like a toffee apple outer coating. The Chimays and Duvel will be going down the hatch tonight for myself and SWMBO and the dregs will be going into 1/4 ltr PET sugar/honey solution at around 1.040 until i can make up a gallon or so of wort tomorrow then they're going into demi johns to culture(The player of games).

In that case, i'd recommend Ken McLeod. How come the best sci-fi writers are Scottish?

Anyway he's more political but less technology-based than Iain. Some of his stuff is a bit mediocre, but the Fall Revolution trilogy/bilogy is superb.

It's
The Star Fraction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Fraction)
The Stone Canal
The Cassini Division

But it can also be read as a bilogy, which branches off into an alternative story arc due to a differing decision being made at the end of the first book:
The Star Fraction
The Sky Road

Thanks Guys Ken Mcleod is now on the list as is Charles Stross. Not only beer but literarture as well. What a site! For any of you guys who took the time to amazon richard preston First Light. I can say it is well worth a read and you will feel your brain creak as it expands with the possibilities of where we really are. It has so many Wow, i never really knew moments in it. Plus its all true, no fiction.

Just recently got into Hamilton over the last 18 months . . .the commonwealth saga was great . . . looking forward to the Temporal void for my holiday in Turkey "Water walker, Water walker".

Wasn't keen on the Nights Dawn trilogy though . . .even though it was well written . . . just not into horror SF genre that much I guess . . . have to get the Greg Mandel stuff as well

Turkeys a great holiday destination. I've been going there on and off since 93. Last year we went to Turunc which is 2 bays away from Marmaris. Totally chilled and very family orientated resort. Not a single pissed up divot in site. Apart from me of course! Where are you off to? Efes darks not a bad beer to try. We all make better but in a basic Lager enviroment its nice to see something different.

The "Fallen Dragon" book is one of his best IMHO....

The third one of the "Void" trilogy is out later this year. I hate it when I'm waiting for author to catch up with my reading requirements!

I nearly killed myself in Turkey.....I did an "SIV" course (Simulation d'Incident en Vol) in Olu Deniz when I used to fly paragliders. Basically, you launched off Baba Dag mountain behind the resort, which was about 6K foot high, caught the thermals and flew out over the bay, then an instructor in a boat below told you by radio which bits of the glider to collapse or mess with in flight. The idea being it was a safe environment to try this stuff in, so that if you got into trouble, you'd have plenty of time (and a soft landing) to sort it out.

I did a "dynamic spin" exercise one day and couldn't get the glider out of it. I ended up corkscrewing down to earth very quickly indeed and due to the G force, couldn't get my reserve 'chute out until about 50 foot before I hit the water. It felt like bloody concrete and my entire back was black and blue afterwards....

On the positive side, when that didn't happen, the flying was awesome (especially the cross country stuff), but the best bit was pulling off perfect landings on the beach. The beach bar there had a special landing mat, and if you hit if smack on, the waiters had a cold beer in your hand before the glider even touched the sand. Very cool indeed.

We are off to Icmeler . . . went there last year for the first time and really fell in love with the place. So completely unlike my expectations, expecting a dry desert like place, totally not expecting mountains and pine forests. We went on a boat trip to Turunc looked a nice place.

I actually rate Efes as a very good pilsner . . . didn't see any dark though will look for it this time . . . and of course there is always Raki :D only another two weeks to go and I really can't wait.

May just have to order Fallen Dragon as well then. . . .I so agree why can't authors write all teh books and then publish them  I'm reading a series by Jean Auel that is currently on book 5 of 6 . . . and book 1 was published in 1980

You and me both! What's more, I thought he cocked it up at the end too - which was a real disappointment to me after all that time.

Icmeler's cool. Been there a couple of times. Just far enough from the bustle of Marmaris but easliy accessible in the water taxis(but not paraglider, too brown trouser for me))Efes Pilsners fine but i hanker for Dark beer after a bit. Hope you find the Dark. Talking of which.

Tim Powers. The drawing of the dark and The Anubis gates. Mindblowing novels and the drawing of the dark is about beer(mostly). I think by the end of this thread we are all going to be sorted for Summer reading!

Well hacked off with the death of RF. All those years and that's it? Liked Pere Callahan coming back from Salem's Lot book. Bet we'd both be in the queue if he brought out just one more though? Charlie the choo choo and the death of Lud was monster.

No sh1t! It seemed to me he just finished Dark Tower badly becuase he couldn't be arsed with it any more.

My favourite SK novels (off the top of my head) apart from DT were Tommyknockers and Dreamcatcher.

I'll go and Google Tim Powers now. Being off work for the next few weeks, I need some new reading material.

TK and dreamcatcher were brilliant. Pet Semetary totally killed me. Read it when i was a kid and thought ho hum. Read it again when my son was about 5 years old and Woah, totally different reaction to the plot. If your Amazoning and you see tim powers the powers of two. That's worth reading. 2 of his EARLY novellas in one cover. Oh no just remembered Dinner at deviants palace as well and THE classic tim Powers Novel On Stranger tides. Know how Disney made a mint off of the pirates of the caribbean series? No idea why Tim Powers hasn't sued them rotten(they ripped off on stranger tides for that plot). Honestly, anybody reading this that even has an inkling towards Sci fi or fantasy will thank me(or send me beer, very subtle hint) once they have read these Tim Powers Novels(honest, he is that good).

The drawing of the dark
The Anubis gates
On Stranger tides
Dinner at deviants Palace

There are more(Expiration date springs to mind) but the ones above are top 4 total rollicking reads.

Oh yeah this is about beer isn't it? Both Chimay red's and the Duvel have been drank by myself and SWMBO and are currently sitting in 3 PET bottles in a 100ml honey/sugar solution at 1.040 and 20 degrees.
