Hmmm. I'm a bit torn now. I don't know whether to let the wort carmelize a little, add a bit of crystal, or just brew as normal and take the light color. I've read the ratings on ratebeer and the nice article by Mr. Jackson, but I don't know how to get the "slight orange" coloring and accompanying flavor they are talking about.
I have a feeling the differences in opinion among you all come down to the different homebrew systems you use and the way they affect your brewing as far as carmelizing, extracting sugars, etc. I wish I had 18 lbs of GP--then I'd make 2 batches! :D
Thanks so much for your input guys. I'll let you know what I end up going with. Cheers

Monk,
You should be able to get another 9 lbs from Morebeer by the weekend.

Take one for the team and get a second batch going! :D

I am drinking bottled TTL at the moment and just compared it with my own TTL and I am sure it has a hint of crystal but I have not noticed it too much in the draught versions.

Wyeast 1469 is supposed to be TTL yeast I am using it at the moment and it is excellent yeast.

SO4, Nottingham, or the Wyeast will all make great beer with the recipe you have I reckon.

All this discussion has gotten me so excited about this brew. The ingredients are coming on Friday and my lady's out of town Saturday!! But I have a huge Neurology Final exam a week from Friday! Ahh...the agony.

I'll have to wait until next Saturday...

...but by then I can get more GP. 8)

:D

Those jackrabbits don't carry the Golden Promise! It's a bummer. I had to order from Austin HB. So my GP and Styrians are rolling through New Mexico right now.

S-04 isn't known as diacetyl central for nothing.

Crystal malt? In landlord? Naaaaa. Straight pale malt hits the colour bang on, and I don't detect any caramel/nuttiness in TTL. If the brewery doesn't use it...don't use it!

Try and get the TTL yeast if you can, but don't worry unduly about Golden Promise. Particularly with a hop schedule like TTL's I doubt you'd notice any difference between that and any other English 2-row pale malt.. The yeast strain and fermentation temperature will make far more of an impact that the pale malt variety.

This is my TTL

5 kg of Maris Otter
120 gms Styrian Goldings @ 3.1% start of boil
30 gms Styrian Goldings at end of boil
1 hour boil
Irish Moss
Wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire yeast
1044 OG

The picture shows my single malt TTL (a bit cloudy) against bottled TTL, the bottled TTL is much darker.

I'll have to go and get some. That's way darker than I remember it. :!:

I'll just walk down the road, either to the off license (US speak: liquor store) or stroll the other way to the supermarket, buy some, and establish the colour. Oh, blessed beery Britain :D

That photo makes TTL look darker than it actually is, but it is certainly darker than an all pale malt beer.

Okay, my plan is this: since I have to split my ag batches for the boil anyway (still boiling on the stove in two 5 gallon pots), I'm going to steep about 115g of medium crystal and add it to one of the 4 gallon worts. So that when they boil down I'll have two 3-gallon batches, one with approximately 5% crystal and the other with 100% Golden Promise. All the other variables will be the same.

I just hope I don't get so scientific that I screw up the beer!
